question about a 9600gt card.

ok so here is my question. I was looking at a cheap 9600gt on ebay and the card specs seamed confusing to me.
here are the specs:

so the graphics processor is the geforce fx9600gt but the base chipset is 9400gt... Is that normal?
 
my 9700 GTS is also based on the 9400 but the more the number go up that means the cards is higher in clock and memory and shaders, even if its based on a lower card it will preform better, but the 9600 GT is not a card to play in very high settings to get good frame rates but its good for med-high settings
 
You wont get very good framerate with a 9600gt, especially when you bump up the settings and resolution.
I have a 9600gt in my macbook pro and it gets decent frams on L4D but the resolution is low and the settings are medium or less.
I use a custom OC 4850 in my desktop and i get 90 FPS average on L4D pretty much maxed settings on 1680x1050
I overclocked my core to 735 from 625 and my memory only to 1120 from 993
It gets the job done for now but i kinda wished i went with a 4870x2
 
A 9600gt is an overclocked version of the 9400gt, which they renamed to make it look better.

well you have the notebook version so it wont be as good as the desktop version.



so what I am wondering is if its normal/does it alsways have a base shipset 9400gt? because I have never notest that wile looking at other 9600gt cards.

It probably does because they are all manufactured the same way. The only difference would be non-reference boards but those are usually just for voltages and cooling.

Yes i know its in the laptop but you will not see that much of a big performance difference, i say less than 10 FPS, maybe around 5 FPS difference. I would still go with a faster card or wait till the next generation cards which come out soon.
 
well I don't have the money to get a faster card its ether the 9600gt or the 9500gt for me...
 
around 80-90$ if I get above 9500gt I need to get a new psu (current psu 380wats).

Oh thats a bummer......if thats the case then u can go with a 9600gt but from nvidias website, there are two requirements for the psu. A 300 watt or a 400watt but they have 2 different cards for some reason.

Its hard to get a decent vid card with only 380 watts considering the new cards all require around 450 and up.
 
9600 will be a fine card for this game depending if your cpu is going to bottleneck you or not. i have an 8600 gt (basically the same as the 9600) and i play this thing at 1680x1050 everything full, no AA/AF full server for 100+ fps. i have overclocked my card a little tho, but you'll still be able to play it fine
 
Lol I'd stay away from recert video cards. Even though they're tested and guaranteed to work, the warranty is usually 30-90 days (at best, some have no waranty). No telling what kind of voltages or heat that thing has been through.

And for cards, a 9600GT will be fine for just about all eGO games (Though the GTS is reportedly much better). You won't get an amazing framerate, but you should be able to handle everything on high with ~30-40.

Ah, and for notebook cards, they don't even compare. The M behind a card = almost half the performance of the regular. If you don't believe me... here are some things that may change your mind.
1) An M card is only about 1/3rd to 1/2 the size of a regular card. While size isn't everything for cards, if you don't have enough room for circuits and capacitors, your card isn't going to get much done.
2) Laptops will never have the cooling that a desktop can afford. And because of this, most mobile cards will idle high (~50-60C) which creates another drop in performance.
