Why Schools should NOT have mandatory Uniforms. Your Opinion wanted!

Clothes are a medium, by which you can express yourself.

Clothes rarely express a person. If anything, clothes are a manipulation in how you are represented. If I walked around wearing skin tight girl jeans, people would stereotype me, without even hearing my views, and opinions.

You can go to, say Kohl's and buy a shirt, but how many of those shirts do you think other people have bought? There is not just 1 of that shirt in the entire world.
The way you think, act, and talk is what makes you you. Not clothes, not friends, and not what personal items like t.vs or cell phones you have cause I can guarantee at least 500,000 people or more also have that.

However you and only you have access to that one thing that can set you apart from everyone else.

Like ramp said... If someone was wearing the same Levi 514s I wear, and a Guns and Roses T-shirt, they are no where NEAR what I am, who I am, and how I think.

I've been wearing a school uniform since the 4th grade, yeah it sucks in the beginning, but I look at it this way, most jobs require you to wear some kind of uniform or dress code anyway right? Whether its a suit or a name tag, so I look at it more along the lines of becoming prepared for the real world. There are NO kids who are made fun of at my school because of what they wear, so that's kind of nice too, everyone's a lot happier than schools that don't enforce a uniform. Although it sucks to get a detention just because your shirt isn't tucked in >.>

if you haveuniforms, you can't express yourself, and everyting will be the same and monotnous.

I don't really care either way. I've experienced both and I can see reasons for both.

For uniforms:

- Abuse towards kids who can't afford the latest fashion ceases
- Easier on the school in terms of the dress code
- No decisions on what to put on in the morning

Against uniforms:

- Freedom of expression
- You have a closet full of clothes, and you can only wear them 2 days a week

Personally, I probably prefer no uniforms, but uniforms really aren't a bad idea. They do a lot of good.

I love how theres so many of these "freedom of expression" responses.

When i get dressed in the morning, i dont go "how best can i express my individuality and self via my apparel today", on the contrary i just put on a shirt i like, jeans or kaki shorts depending on weather, mood, ect. and i walk out the door.

Most people dont put a ton of thought into thier clothes.

Do i like uniforms?
no
Would i be okay with having to wear one?
Sure why not.

just ware teh uniform soo u can save money looking for designer close too impress a girl u dont even know

honestly, i think we should do away with clothes in general.

This!

In my honest opinion uniforms should be enforced.

-I would prefer uniforms because guess what it takes one thing out of the way in the morning so I can sleep longer even if its 2 minutes.

-It will focus students toward their studdies and not what some |insert foul word here| is doing wearing the same thing you have.

-it will eliminate those people that wear items they shouldn't.

-it will NOT stop freedom of expression. Let me expand:

Freedom of expression isn't just your clothing. Your "style" as you youngins put it can wait till you're out of school. That is when you SHOULD express yourself. Think of school like this, it is your JOB to learn and graduate high school, regardless of how you feel about it. Jobs usually have rules, such as dress code!? Wow really?

Get over it, unifroms make life easier in multiple ways.

The trend in America seems that those under the age of 18 nearly have no rights anyway. The Bill of rights have been amended, you cant just skip the amendments and head straight to the base lines, sorry but you just can't.

With current laws today our freedoms are nearly privaleges, such as weapons. We ALL have the right to bare arms but the government had to amend the Bill of Rights in order to keep the country safe. That is why it's illegal to own a gun without the government knowing about it. It is a PRIVALEGE.

I could go on, but I am at work X.x

Here are a few reasons.
1 College does not enforce a dress code, and many of them do not require uniforms
2 Work however does usually have a dress code, so best be used to it now rather than later.

or you can always tell them that i hate dressing up nicely since suits and dress clothes are uncomfortable. thats why i love shorts and jeans lol

In my opinion school uniforms are horrible! Because of the schools taking away freedom of expression... blah blah.. but school uniforms help cut down gang activity. I'm just saying that I personally don't like school uniforms. Tho a dress code should be enforced... like no underwear showing, no baggy baggy pants.... etc. Hope that helps a bit!! XD

I do support individuality, but I understand the concept behind uniforms. It helps prevent dress code issues, and it helps the prevention of non-students and staff from entering the school. There's also the matter of advertising warping our silly, feeble minds, but I'll leave that for another discussion...

Out of personal preference, of course, I would pick out my own clothes rather than wear a uniform.

Bleh, Imo everyone should be allowed to wear what they like.

I'm so happy that we dont have school uniforms. Once our teacher told us "Alright, there are school uniforms coming to our school, how do you-" Class: "AAAAAHHHHHH"

And then it was a joke. 2/3 of the class got an heart attack.

I think they should be no uniforms,

1. Because we should be able to meet a certain requirement of niceness of the shirt.
2. It would teach us responsibility on what to wear, Such as church clothing.

Downsides of this:

1. Gangs
2. Bad shirts.
3. To keep track of us to make sure no one leaves campus.

School uniforms are not mandatory where I live, and I thank God for that.

I believe dressing yourself IS a way of expressing yourself ( sorry IRS ), just as tatoos are, or hair style, piercings or whathaveyou.

If schools and the goverment in general start making choices concerning the liberty of expresion / free choice ( a right every individual living in a democratic country should and must have ) such as what clothes to wear, then they can as well tell you what you can eat, what you can watch, what music/radio show you can listen to....the list is endless.

There were people that actually fought for those very rights you and me enjoy today...Don't let their struggle be in vain.

Liberty of expresion ( as long as it doesn't hurt other living beings ) FTW !

I use words, not clothing, to express myself. Clothing is so unimportant to me I only bother with clothes out of respect for my neighbors. No need to keep them up at night with images of my nakedness haunting their dreams.

:)

Many of our greatest minds do not seem to care much for fashion. If you look at photos of Albert Einstein he is usually dressed fairly simply. The Dali Llama wears a uniform.

Clothing, as a form of expression, seems fairly superflous.

i dont see why people hate uniforms. i had one in grade school and high school and it wasnt bad at all. if anything it gets you used to professional jobs that require them anyways. i could care less for uniforms and i could care less for non uniforms. was just saying it doesnt bother me one way or the other.

but i do feel like some things should be left out of school. like people wearing chains. in college people wear chains and such and it doesnt bother me except when they are sitting in a chair and there chain keeps clanking on the metal. stuff like that is disruptive to learning.

School uniforms would be the best thing to happen to public schools here is why:

You have school for 8 hours out of the 24 hour period. Gee 8 hours of having to focus on school instead of your self-image is totally worht it *eye roll*

Wearing school uniforms can be helpful in many ways. First, having matching outfits can make all students feel equal. Poor students would no longer feel excluded because they were not wearing name brand clothing like the richer kids. In addition, social status would be less of an issue because everyone would be wearing the same clothing. One of the biggest arguments against school uniforms is that students would lose their sense of individuality. I believe that uniforms will improve students’ individuality because they will have to express themselves through their personality and attitude, rather than through an expensive pair of shoes or a brand name pair of jeans. Uniforms will improve self-esteem in the students because they will not feel pressured to dress a certain way.*

Students may display religious messages on items of clothing to the same extent that they are permitted to display other comparable messages. Religious messages may not be singled out for suppression, but rather are subject to the same rules as generally apply to comparable messages. When wearing particular attire, such as yarmulkes and head scarves, during the school day is part of students' religious practice, under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act schools generally may not prohibit the wearing of such items**

A uniform policy may not prohibit students from wearing or displaying expressive items -- for example, a button that supports a political candidate - so long as such items do not independently contribute to disruption by substantially interfering with discipline or with the rights of others. Thus, for example, a uniform policy may prohibit students from wearing a button bearing a gang insignia. A uniform policy may also prohibit items that undermine the integrity of the uniform, notwithstanding their expressive nature, such as a sweatshirt that bears a political message but also covers or replaces the type of shirt required by the uniform policy.**

In 1996 President Clinton said, “ If it means…our young people will learn to evaluate themselves by what they are on the inside, instead of what they’re wearing on the outside, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear uniforms.” (No source)

You youngins sound like the world will end if you can't wear a piece of clothing...

I believe Albert Einstein dressed himself they way he wanted AND NOT the way others wanted him to.

Every form of expression, be it with cloths, hairstile or words should be alowed as long as it doesn't hurt other people.

And mandatory uniforms clearly take away the freedom me and you have to make our own choices about the way we want to look/live/be.

My 2 cents.
