So, I build my new system a few days a go (my first build, I'm really proud of it) and everything was fine... except my CPU cooler. I had gotten a Cooler Master V8, and it was mechanically bad, and it didn't cool well even after I had fixed it. Anyways, my i7 920 is running around 42C idle with the stock cooler now, and I was meaning to overclock it, so I'll need a better cooler.

So, anyone have any good ones? I don't really want a Megahalems, since I don't want to buy an additional 2 fans for it, but getting 1 fan with a Thermalright Extreme 120 might be okay. I can't use the V10 because it's too big, and water cooling is out unless someone can tell me step-by-step how to install a water cooling system, and tell me exactly what to get. And also, I saw some people talking earlier about a good CPU cooler that had the stock Intel attachments, the push and turn ones, so I wouldn't have to install another backplate (I really don't feel like taking my entire system apart again, but if need be, I will).

Cost is not an issue, and I just ordered another side intake fan for my case, so that might get some more air on my processor, but I don't know. So, if anyone could help me, that would be great, and especially great if they can find that cooler with the Intel attachments.

I was actually hoping to stay away from Cooler Master. I don't like their backplate design, nor have I had good experiences with their coolers in the past (see above)

Get the Prolimatech Megahalem with a dual fan configuration. Its a bit pricey but its without a doubt the best air-cooler out their along with the V10 just because V10 only kicks in at really high OC temps.

This is the newest version i could find of the Prolimatech Megahalem though it's exactly the same as the Prolimatech Megahalem Rev. B just without LGA 1156 support.

This new one is called Mega shadow but i think the Megahalem Rev. B would be a better buy if u can get it cheap. The Mega Shadow looks nicer though, more flashy.

Ehh the hyper 212 isn't that amazing of a heatsink, definitely not the best atleast. I like the Cooler Master V10 because of its ability to move heat away with its TEC when you begin reaching really high temps, its great for overclocking and has gotten a bad name because it doesn't kick in till the CPU gets super hot.

Prolimatech Megahalem Rev B, Scythe Ultra Kaze 120x38mm 3000 RPM Fan (Better than 2 120x25mm in Push/Pull), OCZ FREEZE Thermal Compound (Thermal Paste is important and this has no curing time unlike Artic Silver 5 which requires 200 hours). Also the surface on the Prolimatech is already smoothed out and is ready for use unlike many other coolers. I'm getting this for my build, with this you can easily OC the 920 to 4.0ghz.

Total Cost: $86.99

Expensive? Yes
Worth it? Most definitly!

Hey guys, can you do me a favor?

I have an Azza Solano 1000, and don't exactly have it yet. Long story. But I was looking at heat sinks, and my case has a huge side fan. I'm paranoid that if I pick out a heatsink it won't fit.

Are there any shorter ones? All of the ones I'm finding are 120mm+.

well that sucks that he doesn't want a megahalem with 2 fans considering he said money wasnt a problem.
BTW don't use the stock intel push and turn method, its terrible and for most of the good coolers, won't work because they are too heavy and need the backplate. Trust me the push and turn method is terrible atleast i feel so, i nearly broke my motherboard in half just trying to push the pin all the way down and manage to turn it because the bloody thing wouldn't click in.

Theres not really anything better than the megahalem for air cooling so what makes you not like it??

The Noctua NH-D14 beats the Megahalem as is, not to mention you can add another 120mm.

http://www.clunk.org.uk/reviews/noctua-nh-d14-premium-cpu-cooler-review/Page-6.html

Every review site is different and plus look at it.......the Noctua has 120/140mm fans and the Megahalem only has 120/120mm fans, the Noctua is a worth opponent though as i've read from other review sites it comes head to head with the megahalem but most review sites give it to the megahalem.

Edit: nvm i didn't see the 120/120mm noctua setup, they go head to head though as i've said this review site showing the noctua pulling ahead by like 1 degrees at load stock but the same at OC load and everything else

So? That is a difference in design. You can't fault the Noctua for being able to accommodate a bigger fan than the Megahalems can. That would be like saying it is unfair to race a Corvette and a Mustang because the Corvette has a 5.7 liter engine while the Mustang has a 5.0 liter.

All of the reliable sites I have seen that have reviewed the Noctua NH-D14 put it on par with the Megahalems(with dual 120's) while at stock configuration, and ahead of the Megahalems when another 120 is added.

Im not faulting it for being able to carry a larger fan....hell nice job it can carry a bigger fan, i was just saying head to head 120/120 the noctua is head to head with the megahalem.

The corvette would win though.....mustang has soft shocks and isn't as quickly responsive on a track, and straight up drag, corvette would get their faster, 0-60 in like 4.4 sec? mustang = 0-60 in like 4.9 sec?

I don't deny though that the Noctua in the end is the better cooler, it is newer and an upgraded revision of its predecessor so we will have to see wat Prolimatech does to the Megahalem to compete.

Exactly. And considering it can accommodate more than that(and it does comes stock with the 140), it is the better cooler in my eyes. I mean, same performance with two 120's, and it can accommodate two 120's and a 140 Ever need more cooling, you can still add a fan. It outperforms/performs on par with the Megahalems out of the box, and can have more added. It's the better cooler.
