My family first got a pc in April, 2000. 256mb RAM, 800mhz AMD processor, 40GB hard drive @ 7200rpm.


What was your first pc?
 
My first PC was a Packard Bell PM 5996CDT. Specs are as follows:

Cpu: Intel Pentium 100Mhz (16KB Cache)
RAM: 16MB
GPU: 1MB
HDD: 1GB

Bought on November 12, 1995 / price: $2,499.99

Second PC was an HP 8590C. Specs are as follows:

CPU: Intel Pentium III 600Mhz
Ram: 128MB
GPU: 8MB
HDD: 27GB

Bought July 9, 2000 / Price: $2049.00


The prices were crazy back then. After that, I started building my own PC's. And haven't looked back since.
 
All I remember is that it was based on the original Pentium. Wow, computers have come a long way...
 
Yeah I don't remember much besides that it was a Pentium 4 processor Dell that a was a complete nightmare ever since i first got it.

Very content with my good ol' compaq these days though. =D

crap you guys are young i remember waiting for the p4's to come out you guys this is the first your used.

well i cant remember the exact specs but it was based on an earlier intel 80486 processor 16mb or ram 8mb vram and a 4gb harddrive. it ran debian and windows 95.

but i do remember dealing with a lot of i386 machines running pre 95 versions of windows and dos and some slackware and debian boxes.

far cry from a amd quad @ 3.2 per core and 8gb ram and 1gb vram.
and drive space let me see 4gb was amazing back then and that was on multiple drives and compare that to 6TB i have between my desktop and server.

edit: i think my phone beats that computer now

I had my own PC when I was like 4-6 years old. We had 2 others as well. Around 1995ish.

It was the Gateway 2000. All I remember was the CPU was clocked at 300mhz

Wow, my pc we paid $1000 for, and it was custom built. Only just died THIS YEAR.

Even then it was only the HDD that died

ya but that setup was back in 95 computers were much more expensive back then my was about the same when i got it.

pretty much around 1999 and 2000 prices have drastically dropped on computers even some of the best computers todays like the i7 setups are cheaper then the average pc of the early 90's or late 80's

Ahh jeez. The first computer I had was some old late 80s early 90s apple computer where you had to use the type commands to do anything with it. I was in elementary school at the time and the only thing I remember was playing this ninja game on a floppy disk. Man good times good times.

Let's see...

HP Pavilion
Intel Celeron 400mhz
64mb SDRAM (later upgraded to 192mb)
6GB HDD
onboard sound
onboard intel graphics (upgraded to Geforce 2 MX 200 32mb)
17" HP monitor (1280x1024 res)

That's all I remember. I also remember how terribly slow it was too.
 
I remember my first pc had windows 95 and a CD drive....the 2nd one I got at a computer show with windows 98, a burner drive, and it came with half-life:uplink.
 
well let's see...back in the early 90's....

486dx
2mb ram (probably less)
dont remember the HDD size

it ran some version of DOSshell at the beginning and then we had it upgraded so we could install Win95 from like 20 floppies...
 
Thanks for making me feel old... my first computer and what I learned to program in BASIC on when I was 6 was a Tandy 1000EX....

My current computer is a nice dual core 2.4ghz... blah blah blah.... my first computer had a 4.77mHZ (yes.... that was correct.... 4.77 MEGAhz) 8088 processor in it... and haddrives? WTH are those? 5.25 double density floppies.... that was my "harddrive"/..... :lol:

I think my Atari 7800 has you beat! We got it it in the early 80's. It was mostly a gaming console with a word processor attachment, the attachment just looked like a cassette player.
As an adult my wife got a great deal on used computers from her work ($300) we got the HP 150. It actually had a touch screen, had to have been the fist one out there.

In 98-99 I had a friend build one, and i remember, the big decision was to go with the 350 mhz or pay a little extra for the 400!! I went the cheap route.
The trend slowly crept from the 400 to 425, to 550!

Then in 2003 I went all out, I got the Sony Vaio with 3ghz and 256 ram! Well that is the computer than I am still using today. I added more memory (up to 2ghz) and a new graphics card. It is good enough for me to kick butt in CSS, but I did notice it can't handle MW2. Perhaps it might be time for a new one, just not sure what to get.

As far as gaming consoles go, I rember when my dad brought home Super Pong, it was the latest and greatest, way better that regular pong!! Then we got Atari 2600, who remembers Pitfall on the 2600??then the Atari 7800, then Sega Genisis. I am looking at the 7800 and Sega Genisis, not sure what happened to the Pong or 2600, might be in my dad's attic.

Ah, the memories......
 
i dont even remember wat was my first computer the only thing that i remember is butch of leters
 
I was too young to remember all the specs (cuz I didnt care at that age) but I think I started on a PentiumIII and Win95. Then my dad got a Sony Vaio P4 with WinME which was horrible (as some of you may remember). Took me 2 months after the release of WinXP to get my dad on the wagon. Then took me 4 months to get him to switch from 56k to DSL.

My dad used the Sony Vaio until sometime near the end of 2009 (approx 10 years, it had started crapping out after about 7 years though lol)

Now I run an i7 920, hd 4890, and some old 7200rpm sata's which are about to get upgraded to SAS.

My linux box (server) is using 10 year old parts still, I don't even know what's inside really. Used as a webserver for my highschool years to get around anti-gaming blocks at school. Now serves as a Source Dedicated Server whenever I can get it to boot without massive failures
 
my first computer lasted 15 years from 1992-2007 it ran windows 3.1 and i loved playing asteroids on it, we got it in Japan when our family lived there
