Origin required to play BF3

There has been some confusion over how EA?s new Origin service will be integrated into Battlefield 3. Battlelog plays a big part, with the ability to browse servers and join a game directly from the browser. But according to DICE?s Daniel Martos, Origin will be required in order to play Battlefield 3 if the game is bought in retail. We don?t know whether this is true if the game is downloaded through a digital download service other than Origin, but we suspect Origin will be required no matter what.
This isn?t a big surprise, as many games these days require a client to run in the background, most notably games from Valve, where Steam is required. However, it can become an issue if the client is draining CPU power, which was the case with Origin during the Battlefield 3 alpha trial. Of course, it was only an alpha, so many tweaks and fixes are bound to happen. Another issue is memory usage among these clients, both Steam and Origin appear to use somewhere around 50 MB of memory during a game (but that can depend on the game and other system specs).
Last week, EA confirmed that Battlefield 3 would not be released on Steam due to certain Steam rules where DLC and patches must be provided via Steam.

Yeah... That's not a BIG surprise, but still... I don't like the Origin app... is slow and it takes too many resources, so I hope they fix this... Steam got an update twice a month

I know they put out the official word as to why they werent going to use steam, but this just reinforces that its more about them wanting it on their own system. And while it may be true what they claim about steam, definitely seems like there are ulterior motives. I am also not surprised.

Of course if we all remember back to 2004, valve did the same thing with half life 2.

I guess the future is going to be one with multiple content delivery services, oh well.

Plus I already pre-ordered on origin. I just hope that if they are trying the game to the service that they remove that silly 1 year clause in the download contract.

edit: after thinking about it, it will be nice if its integrated into origin the same way source games are integrated with steam. Just need to iron all the bugs out and kinda annoying to have to use multiple services.

I'm not really that surprised or worried because you can just have Origin on Steam as a non-Steam game, so you can still use steam chat and the like, whilst using Origin. That's what I did when playing the alpha. I also didn't really notice any lag from it

I don't really care either way to be honest. I can run BC2 from Origin with Steam open at the same time without lag, and since BF3 won't be a console port it should run even better.

Yeah I really wanted a hard copy too, but I wanted to play ASAP and get the pre-order bonuses a lot more lol.

You can get a hard copy through origin y'know. And even still gamestop offers the same pre order stuff as origin

Not very many at all. I've seen about 5 servers with a decent amount of players, none of them full at all. Not even the highest titan servers.
I think maybe 20-40 servers exist. BF2 really has lasting appeal...

That's so sad... it really is a shame because 2142 offered everything bf2 had and more... with better graphics as well.

Only one Battlefield 3 soldier allowed per player?

Yesterday we reported that Origin would be required to play retail copies of Battlefield 3, and possible digital downloads as well. This wasn?t a big surprise and most gamers wouldn?t mind, but we?ve now got some news that might arouse some anger and disappointment among fans. In the past Battlefield games, players would create an account for the Battlefield game (e.g. BF2 or Bad Company 2), and they subsequently could create several profiles or soldiers to play as. Now, according to DICE?s Daniel Matros, one?s Battlefield 3 soldier is tied to the Origin account. In the Battlefield 3 alpha, one?s soldier name was the same as the Origin profile, and there was no way of changing it or creating a new soldier. In order to change your in-game name, you had to change your Origin profile name. However, this was an alpha version, and it?s a possible that certain player features were turned off.
But Matros specifically commented on Twitter regarding the ability to chose a player name in Battlefield 3 by saying ?your name is linked to your origin persona?. It suggests that there would be only one player per Origin account, which is quite disappointing, seeing how the feature was available in almost all other Battlefield games (we?re not certain whether it?s possible to create multiple Origin profiles without having to re-purchase games). Unlike consoles, PC players have had a choice of not only choosing their name, but creating a new soldier and starting from scratch, if they so desired. This also leads us to believe that Origin will be required regardless of where Battlefield 3 is purchased ? retail or any of the digital distribution platforms.
We hope that this isn?t the final decision regarding player profiles and that DICE reconsiders keeping the feature that was present in many Battlefield games. And while we can understand why EA would tightly integrate Battlefield 3 into Origin, this is perhaps taking it a step too far.

Interesting. I know from the Battlefield 3 Beta, from what I heard, just as stated in the article, it would use their Origin ID, however, the game really didn't have many features you'd expect to see in the final game either way (Just like, you couldn't choose or create squads in the beta.), so I think this will change.

If you own a hard copy, it will store the game in Origin for you when you install it, so on future installs, you don't need the disc - you can download & install directly from Origin if you wish. (It also stores your CD Key)

Personally, I like Origin. It is supposed to be less of a resource hog than Steam, and it stores all my EA Games in one spot .. can't complain.
