Maxed and high are two different things. Don't confuse what reflex is saying, which is truth. I had a 6850, and I could run everything with very satisfying settings. You won't, however, be able to just run into advanced options and jam everything to the right and get playable settings, especially AA.

Edit: Although at 1440x900 you shouldn't have any problems.

ya i dont care much about AA, as long as i can play most games (BF3, RO2, SWTOR, etc) on high I'll be fine. Sorry i misread/understood his post, but that's what happens when i have little to no sleep lol. Ill probably just CFX 2 6850s later down the road, then i wont have to worry bout anything :)

Because that is all i can afford. I'm on a budget so i am just using the monitor i have now.

ya no offense, but ur name totally matches this situation. i think you need to better budget yourself so that you can improve the size of your monitor. in fact newegg & best buy are always having deals lately on monitors (usually anywhere from 20-23"). ive been gettin this info from CNet's cheapskate newsletter (feel free to sign up for it, ive posted a few items on the forums in the past via their newsletter).

I have other things to buy right now.. Car parts (no air in my car D: ), school books, etc. Plus im fine with the monitor i have. I don't need a 23' monitor to have fun.

Just because he doesn't have the money to spend on something better now doesn't mean anything. He can always upgrade later. Also there is no need to insult the man. Not everybody has the money to go spend on a thousand dollar computer.

On a thread that started by inquiries about a motherboard, the logic behind this post eludes me. A monitor can always be bought, he's building a computer right now. What you describe here would only end up costing more money because of hardware replacement, over a monitor that isn't needed right away.

I know it's hard on these threads, but I would stick to the questions asked.

This thread is a asking for an opinion on what motherboard he should buy, not a monitor. He was also not asking for an opinion on his budget. So your point is null.
 
Well, depending on if he wants to upgrade his monitor (which would be a wise investment even if it does not happen right away), this can definitely affect what he buys currently.
 
I would go with a power supply that is capable of 50% more current than you need. Reason being, when the power supply is operating at 50% capacity it is going to be more efficient. As others have said, go with a quality power supply. Too many people cheap out on power supplies that are overrated and made with garbage components. Corsair, Seasonic, PC Power & Cooling, Enermax and OCZ are good brands. Don't let the wattage be your only deciding factor when buying power supplies.

this is the biggest load of PCP&C marketing crapolla every. (well other brands try to tell you this too, but pcppc started it)

I invite you to read reviews that actually measure efficiency. It isn't marketing crapola, it is fact. Hell, even read the 80 PLUS specifications.

I invite you to ACTUALLY read what i posted.

I can summarize if you want:

Peak efficiency is between 50 and 60ish percent depending on the platform, not disagreeing with you there.. Say your rig uses 100w max at full load (just for easy math). To get peak efficiency, you would need to get about 200w power supply.

BUT, this assumes that you are running your rig at 100% 24/7 (or whenever you use it). I really do not find this a likely scenario for any rig other than a render farm, F@H rig, or whatever. Most normal rigs sit at idle most of the time.

In the case of the sample, for simple math, we will say it idles at 50w.

Since you idle more than you run full load, it makes more sense to buy a power supply that is MOST efficient at idle.

In the case of the sample, a 110-120w power supply would probably be ideal.

(again, it is just a sample for easy math, but you can apply to concept to anything)


50% more than you need is a load of crap no need to buy a 1500w power supply for a 1kw rig. It's just silly.
