ATI vs NVIDIA

Go with the 9800.
I've seen it stack up against the 4870 and it's much quicker, if I hadn't been talked into buying 2 3870s I would probably have gone Nvidia, like a 9800x2.

sorry guys but nvidia is the best they always work. every card they have made is art
for ATI i guess it depends on the experience u have had with them for me they suck
main reason is because i cant tell whether the higher number of the card is better or
worse they have like a 9600 and its like 10 years old they need a way to label the cards
so people can tell if there any good or not . unlike ATI nvidia's cards are simple to tell
the higher the number is the better it is.

btw, ati has went upwards with their scale on where to label the names of their cards... as where nvidia just did a backflip from 9800 series to 260-280 series??? In my opinion, I am neutral on which card someone should get. Nvidia and ATI are basically the same thing. They both prove performance and its all about how expensive. Now me, I have a 4870x2 and it runs great. It pretty much matches up with the GTX280 on performance. I am sure +- 1-15fps will not make that much of a difference in games on the benchmark scales on if you get an nvidia card or ati card. It is not worth it sometimes to go with the more expensive card when you can get something that runs close to that performance for much less.


BTW, back on subject. Congrats on picking the 4850. I heard many good things on that card and hope you have fun with it

nVidia is my choice, its easy to change the graphics, pretty nice looking to.
The best about nVidia is that its possible to change graphics settings to lets just say Battlefield 2, without being ingame. I say go for a powerful nVidia card

Nvidia and ATI go back and forth on their graphics card capabilities, that is why they are the two best... up until 6-7 months ago, Nvidia was on top... ATI now has the best cards in the 4800 Series... especially the 4870x2... they have stepped up to the next level in card design, and Nvidia was at a loss.... mainly waht happened is ATI came out with cards that didn't stack up, so they pushed the launch of the 4800 series out a year ahead of schedule and Nvidia didn't have anything that could compare at the moment... also, there was a big lawsuit about 7 months ago that forced intel boards to accommodate Nvidia cards... unfortunately I built my rig just before all these changes in the market... so I'm running a AMD 5500 Brisbane CPU Black box with dual Nvidia 8800GT vid cards in SLI... it does smoke, but there is much better bang for my buck out there now...

If you do decide to go with Nvidia, or to pursue an SLI setup, then I would caution to be wary of drivers... I had an issue going to nvidias latest drivers becuase steam said they were out of date, and it caused all my games to crash the drivers in SLI as well as had issue launching full screen games... finally I found some older drivers on my card manufacturers website, and everything works great again...

Also for the record, although my current gaming rig uses Nvidia... my secondary rig runs an ATI 2650 HD card that still is good enough to do anything with... prior to that card, I had a Radeon 9800pro... and that card lasted for 5 years through 3 machines still performing and playing anything up until pixel shader 2.0 came out and I had to replace it to play assassins creed

ok ok, i also had a few to say on this, but lets not get side tracked, back on topic people.

im glad you pick the 4850, nice choice exclamation, but word of caution, since it is overclocked, the only warranty you get is going to be ONLY FROM NEW EGG. after theirs expire which im sure it will, and if anything happens to your card afterward, they cannot do anything about it. because the asus card does not come with a warranty. so they will not do anything about it. this is one of my reasons that i go with nvidia evga cards, they have a warranty and nothing ever broke. i have a 7600gt that i gave my brother to use, and its still going strong, and that was one powerful card. now i have a 8800gt, nothing is wrong and i dont even need to overclock anything. if anything happens, i have the warranty to cover me.

just giving you a heads up, i dont see them giving a warranty, not even a one year one. hope you get to read this before you bought already, and maybe go for another that has a warranty >.<

o, and once you get your rebate, you cannot RMA to new egg. :/

I side with nVidia only because evga makes their cards exclusively. Best customer server ever. But you can't say either brand is better since they keep leapfrogging each other with new products.

bang for the buck is ati. but for sure ranging hardon power it goes to nvidia. I have a gtx260 that I spend 300 on and I will never regret that purchase. I have all the settings cranked up and never get a graphics lag in any of the game I play. Including farcry 2 and crysis. I would have to say go with the gtx series. They're more expensive and they get a little bit lower scores in a few games but overall whip the 4870x2 in most games. Nvidia is still the top dog.

ehh thats not true at all, and im not a fan of either side.

ive had radeon 9800 pro, 8800gts, and now 4870x2

but nvidia is not dying, they just slipped, but they are getting back up, check out the GTX295 if you really think nvidia is out of the game.

both video card manufacturers are doing great. Amd on the other hand...

With the warranty I can buy a 1 or 2 year warranty with newegg for a little extra cash. It probably will be worth it. I haven't bought it. I'm still having doubts whether or not I should actually build myself a computer rather than save the money for a car when mine dies. My computer now though is rather out-dated and I want the upgrade so I can play all the newer games like Bioshock and Assassin's Creed. My current pc meets the minimum requirements for L4D.

I say that you should go with an nVidia. Had an ATI before and it sucked, now I have an ASUS nVidia EN9600GSO and it runs perfectly! Every game on high graphics level. Go for the nVidia.

At any resolution under 1280 X1024, this is the truth.

The lowered VRAM hardly affects you at lower resolutions, yet, the price is so cheap you can run it in SLI if you really want to get that little extra push.
