I have the SBG6580 from my ISP and though I'm sure it's fine, I prefer to run it in bridged mode to my WRT54G with DDWRT firmware. It can be a PITA to setup, but it seems to perform better this way, and managing things like port forwarding and DDNS is much less hassle.

For performance to value the Hyper 212 Evo can't be beat. I've got it installed and am overclocking by 900Mhz on a bulldozer with minimal heat increases.

I would also go with Ubuntu, though I'm not sure going with the server version would be best if you have little experience. The key though is that it sounds like you'll only be needing a SAMBA setup. The great thing about linux is that you'll have a much easier time(believe it or not) finding...

Agree on Deathadder. The Abyssus looks nice enough, and has the split in the front similar to the Naga, but it has the same resolution and fewer buttons than the Deathadder. Depending on what games you want a mouse for that may not be a problem.

A few things. The fact that you are saying you have 6.x GB of RAM makes me think of a fairly common issue. When you right click "Computer" and click properties does it say you actually have 8GB but t hat 6.14 are available? if so you need to run MSConfig go to the boot tab -> Advanced Options...
