EdgeGamers Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Twenty years. 20 years. XX years. Happy Birthday, EdgeGamers.
In July 2006, EdgeGamers was founded when JohnT, Artimus, and a handful of dedicated Day of Defeat players decided they wanted to game their own way. They launched our very first server, DoD Avalanche, setting into motion a journey that would grow into one of the longest-running gaming communities around. What started as a single server became something far bigger than anyone could have imagined.
EdgeGamers has become a unique place that has cultivated not just fun and games, but professional growth, lifelong friendships, and a community unlike any other. Millions of gamers have found their way through our doors over the years, whether it was through our game servers, Ventrilo, TeamSpeak, Discord, or the many versions of our website and forums.
This place has meant something different to every person who has passed through, or joined up as a member, became an admin, or led as a leader. Life-changing moments have happened here. We've celebrated the highest of highs and endured some of life's lowest lows together. Yet somehow, no matter what was happening in the real world, we always had a place to come back to.
We could blow off steam in a game of Day of Defeat, TeamFortress2 or Counter-Strike. We could spend hours throwing blocks down and mining our way through every cave in Minecraft. We had our disagreements along the way. Who could forget the great debate over what actually was foul language during the height of our Battlefield success? But even when times were difficult, we always found our way. Some may say we emerged on the decline. Many counted us out time and time again. Those of us at EdgeGamers core all know we emerged exactly where we needed to be.
EdgeGamers may not have the scale, player counts, or activity it had five, ten, or fifteen years ago. But that's never been what made this place special. What matters is that we still have our place.
A place where, for just a little while, the outside world disappears behind a pair of headphones.
A place where we can jump into a voice channel and shoot the sh*t.
A place where, twenty years later, we still get to be the same gamers alongside the people who matter most to us. Our EdgeGamers friends.
