There was this TF2 Advisor (or whatever we called them way back when) that I thought would be great for leading the entire community as a CM. I remember walking around the Long Beach Shoreline Marina, pitching my idea to him. His answer was a passionate longing to stay with his people in TF2. He really didn’t want the job I was offering.

I eventually talked GardenGroveVW GardenGroveVW into it, and we are a better community for his decision.

A few years later we had a problem. An energetic young man named Legend Legend , then Ill Legend, was promoted to CM and was doing well with the CS division. The problem was nobody realized he was 16 years old, way under our minimum age requirement for the position. When it was finally discovered, the issue was brought to me to solve.

I immediately called Legend and said, “Put your mom on the phone.” She reluctantly joined me on the line and I told her our problem. You see, Legend, although goofy at times, held himself with maturity way beyond his years. I told his mother that we’d like to keep him as CM, but only if she agreed. She did, because she knew, as we did, that he was leadership material. I think he might even have been the leader of THAT family. He’s still goofy at times.

Back during COVID, myself, Legend, GardenGrove and Gabe organized a massive charity 5v5 cs tournament with a bunch of massive GTA streamers, partnering with national charity organization LANFest, we raised almost $10,000 for 2 amazing charities, had like 10k concurrent viewers across 11 streams, and overall had a great time.

I'm an old-timer. I joined way back in 2008, when I stumbled upon EdgeGamers Organization due to this excellent TF2 server community. TF2 was a whole year old then, and I had just joined the ranks of First Person Shooter and had a lot to learn. EGO forms core memories of my gamer career during that time, and I'm gratified to see the clan I joined back in the day still going strong.

A couple of memories from you from the archives:

I had just gotten a grip on TF2 when I decided to play this other "shooter" I'd seen people talk about on the forums, something called CounterStrike: Source. Those of you with more than 15 minutes of experience with shooters will know that Engineer and Counter Terrorist are completely different animals, but I didn't know better, so I bought the game and gave it a try. I sucked. I constantly got outmaneuvered, I had no shooter skills... I played Engineer because the gun shot itself. I even threw a flashbang at myself on the first match somehow. But I was damned if I wasn't going to figure out this game, so I kept at it, one embarrassing death after another. And then something unexpected happened. I started getting Admin Whispers in my chat with cryptic advice, like "Keep your gun pointed up, stop looking at the ground." An admin, who's name has been lost to the mists of my bipolar medication, took pity on me and started training me. I had a whole posse of players who took me under their wing and taught me the ropes. I still suck at CS, but not despite their best efforts.

In 2009, the North Texas eGO group met at a Taco Cabana to meet the people behind the screennames and eat Mustoreos. It was a grand time meeting everyone and making JohnT eat a mustoreo live.

Turbine Tuesday was my personal mission for a year in the TF2 division. Turbine is still my favorite map, and I lobbied hard to get a 24/7 server, personally promising GardenGroveVW, JohnT, and any leadership I could corner that I'd get it in first place if they'd do it. They did it, and after months of work, lobbying, long nights in underpopulated maps, and memes, it finally happened. July 24, 2009, to be exact:

I finally got my O November 4th, 2008, and I even saved the Condump of the promotion (You can see it here). At the time, if I recall correctly, when you got your G you got some basic admin commands to help administrate the server; when you got your O you got the banhammer. I was a kind, fair, but firm admin, and the time came to ban a player on the TF2 server for misbehavior. This specific infraction required a day ban across the entire eGO fleet of servers.

At the time, I was running both TF2 and CounterStrike Source, and they ran slightly different versions of the admin tool. In CounterStrike, the ban duration in the command was in seconds, so I banned this person for 86,400 seconds.

In TF2, the ban duration was in days. The server dutifully put up a message across all connected players in all eGO servers that this player was banned for 236 Years.

They never bothered contesting the ban.

These are just some of my favorite memories of this wonderful group of people. I eventually drifted to other games, but EdgeGamers Organization will always have a very, very special place at the core of my gamer heart. The friendships I made, the lessons I learned, and the fun times I had remain with me, 18 years later.

I had countless memories across the community since first coming around in 2010, then joining on January 16, 2011. Even though my PC at the time could only handle 30 fps max if I was lucky, I hung out in the CS:S Highschool, cs_office, and de_dust servers very regularly. I loved spending hours upon hours in Ventrilo and later Teamspeak, chopping it up with the community and forging friendships.

One night in particular during 2012-2013, a handful of CS:S division members hopped on L4D2, and we wanted a matching theme of names. We ultimately went with The Lion King. I can't remember entirely who was playing at this point in time, but we had Timone, Pumba, Rafiki, and I was Scar, which has continued to be an alias I use to this day.

One night during my PSC days in 2013, I was brought into the private Leadership channel with Blindy and (I believe) Dead Tom, both the Division Leaders at the time. I was questioned about an application I accepted that didn't meet our requirements. I believe they mentioned the name was an issue. After looking back in DAPS (our application management system at the time), I didn't recognize any discrepancies with any of my recent applications. Eventually, they folded and admitted they were messing with me, and I was being promoted from eG to eGO.

Later that same year in July, I would be promoted to Advisor in the PSC to help create the EC team. As luck would have it, right when I was promoted, my family was about to leave for vacation, and I was gone for a week. As soon as I returned, I got straight to work. Building the global EC team was definitely a challenge, but it was a welcome one as it paid off greatly.

Being given many opportunities in eGO has translated to things I do in real life to this day. My time in PSC as a "customer service" style role helped me be more prepared for my first job. Being an EC helped me be comfortable taking charge and leading groups of people. Recruiting ~150 people helped me learn how to approach people and flow with conversations. Admin training helped me get my first promotion as a trainer. Being an Advisor (Manager now) helped me in my first supervisor and later managerial positions. Writing and quality checking for Media helps me format better emails and professional documents.

The last paragraph diverts from the topic given in the original post, but it feels necessary to include. I don't know if some of the ambitions and opportunities I've had would have necessarily been there if I hadn't been part of EdgeGamers.

This story is a little more recent, going back to when CS2 first launched in 2023 and we were still trying to get our servers back up and running. At the time, a lot of people were asking for minigames events because, back in CS:GO, those servers were constantly popular and filling up.

Since there was clearly interest, I decided to spin up a small test server on a little Google Cloud box I had lying around. It was nothing fancy, no MAUL, no commands, no roles, but it was enough for us to throw together a basic CS2 minigames server, that I could run off the console, and start testing what was possible. At that point, there were only a few ported maps available, so we were mostly experimenting to see what worked.

We did not bother password-locking the server for testing because we honestly did not expect many people to join. We sent a quick announcement in Discord asking a few players to hop in and help us test, but to our surprise, around 16 eGO members showed up almost immediately. Then more started trickling in from the server browser, along with even more eGO members.

Before long, that tiny test server was completely overwhelmed. It could barely handle 20 players, but somehow it climbed all the way to 64/64. The server lagged terribly, but nobody seemed to care. People kept playing and laughing. The event ended up running for nearly three and a half to four hours before what was probably the tenth server crash finally made us call it a night.

A few days later, we tried it again. This time, I had paid for an upgraded server, thinking it would be enough to handle the load. It Wasn't. Once again, we hit 64/64 players, and once again, the server struggled the entire time. Even with the crashes and lag, the event lasted longer than I can even remember.

Those early minigames tests ended up proving people still wanted these kinds of events in CS2. The turnout helped us convince Tech (I wasn't a part at the time) to give us an official eGO-supported server that could be used for events. From there, after a few weeks for me to get it properly setup (though it would take another year for maul to be added), we started hosting weekly minigames, and since the server was also occasionally used for scrims, it became a flexible multi-purpose event server.

That small, laggy test server eventually led to weekly CS2 minigames and scrims, two events that have remained popular ever since CS2 launched. They may not hit 64/64 like those first chaotic nights anymore, but those early events showed just how strong the community’s interest still was.

You can all blame D Davethegreat for me being here. I joined in 2008 after DTG worked on me for days in the 24/7 Avalanche server.

I think my top memory would have to be the Vegas Meet Up in 2015. Being able to finally share a beer (well, many beers) face to face with people I considered my best friends was magical. USCG Hammer USCG Hammer , GardenGroveVW GardenGroveVW and I nearly getting thrown out of the big get together for trying to sneak alcohol in was legendary. I remember introducing myself to everyone as Artimus Artimus on the first day. I'd also like to formally apologize to those who were stuck in the elevator after I pushed all the buttons. Being trusted with Austin's camera and then immediately proving why that was a mistake, let's just say the moon was full and bright that day.

Most importantly, met the woman who would, years later, decide she wanted to be stuck with me forever. Summer Summer

Being able to meet some of you face to face has been the biggest joy for me in EdgeGamers.
  • Met P ProCombat (R.I.P.) in Wichita multiple times. I know I speak for a lot of people when I say I really miss this guy. He was something special.
  • I met Aaron Aaron in Texas for some damn good Texas BBQ before finishing my journey to the Formula 1 race that weekend.
  • I met Ric Ric in Kansas City for some epic southern cooking at Lula's Southern Cookhouse (HIGHLY recommend if you're in the area).
  • Met Alex Alex multiple times and will probably continue to do so as he is very nearby.
  • Met the 2nd best mechanic in all of Los Santos, @Hideout, in Topeka for some grub. We all know who is #1.
  • A bunch of the TF2 gang met up in Kansas City. P Pzycho Maserati Maserati , P PepperRabbit Minty Minty Foxy Foxy and so many more. We did some window showing at Country Club Plaza and went to the Kansas City Zoo, which was an absolute blast.
  • Met FirezFury FirezFury first in Vegas, but we also met up in Chicago recently for the best pizza available in Chicago. Looking forward to doing this again.
  • Met B blackhawksniper on multiple occassions. Took my first international flight ever to meet him in Canada for Formula 1. Trying to plan our next meet up!
  • Met D dunk182 in Kansas City a couple of times and in Nebraska. Will very likely continue to see him. We're overdue for a bidness meeting.
  • Met I iGreen , (R.I.P.) when he traveled to the United States for vacation. Took him up to Kansas City where we met up with T ToiletPastries .
  • Met D Dryft on multiple occasions. We also have the unfortunate joy of being in the same horrible career field.
I will never regret the time I've spent in this community.

There are countless. Mustoreos, my mullet, the pink cowboy hat, seeing Artimus Artimus in concert, endless nights just talking and watching servers. Not even playing - just watching.

Here's 2 of my favorites: one old, one recent.

1) Flying halfway across the country on a whim to stay with GardenGroveVW GardenGroveVW for a few days. He picked me up at the airport and showed me around SoCal. Hunnington beach (still one of my favorite places on the planet, I almost proposed to my now wife there years later) and even drove to San Diego with Romantic Death to see Dominion and the USS Midway.

2) Literally 2 weeks ago I get a text from GGVW that he was in Austin (where I am) on a layover for a few hours. Well that few hours turned in to a canceled flight and an overnight stay. I literally jumped straight in my car and drove to the airport at like 9:00 at night just to see my friend.

.....there's no picture of this one because 1) he was balls tired and 2) we're both dudes and don't think about that stuff.

THAT'S what eGO has always been to me. The games were never the focus. The games were fun. I had amazing times playing DoD:S and TF2. But with the friendships - those are life long and are memories I will cherish forever.

Favorite memory? Playing on prospekt on the CS:S Jail server with Rogue Sniper. I think I probably came off as an annoying teenager at the time, but hearing that guy have so much fun on the map he created, helping people learn to play it since it was a very unconventional map... that energy was infectious and is a large part of why I stuck around.

Or maybe it was when he was still around when I came back. Learning that he has kept up map making all that time and was still porting his old maps from CS:S to CS:GO. Well I say "porting" but the work he would put into them they might as well have been complete remakes (and often were). It was super fun playing his maps and getting to test them before he'd release them on the server.

I can't count the amount of amazing memories I have because of the Jail server and the people that made it what it was

I'm not sure I can pick just one favorite memory. Events on CSS back in the early 2010s come to mind. Not being a big Jail fan, I still came to the events because even if you sucked, you still had a lot of fun playing. Hopping between the CSS servers, dust, italy, high school, and dust 2 to see who was on and play a few rounds. Coming back after stepping away for a while and still having familiar faces to reminisce with.

I didn't realize the scale of the meetings at the time, but one thing that sticks out to me now is how big those clan wide meetings on Ventrilo were. There would be easily like 200+ people in there or something like that. Can't really remember exactly, but I do remember seeing a huge list of members in those meetings.

Highschool server, jail and italy, zm server, scrims against other members. Turbine, toy fort, and black mesa on TF2. Kalt, donner, and strand servers on dod. Garrys mod.

With all the divisions sometimes you'd run into a random person from cod, or insurgency or something and they'd play counterstrike for awhile, you'd get along great then they would disappear for months because they went back to their game. But I still remember quite a few of those players.

All I know is, John gave me some good advice for immigration and Hammer got me out of more trouble than I can count. Razor, Doppler and Helpless Glint - very good people that I miss.
Cheers eGO

Also gotta throw this out:

Our 2 year anniversary. We had every. Single. Server. FILLED for the entirety of that event. That was a blast.

I first joined EdgeGamers through the GTA server, and the very first person I interacted with was Tiny Tina. If it wasn’t for them taking the time to show me how to get started and making me feel welcome, I honestly don’t know if I’d still be here today.

Over the years, I’ve made so many incredible memories and met some amazing people that I now consider close friends. People like xJDx xJDx , Leon Leon , GardenGroveVW GardenGroveVW , and Legend Legend . Whether it’s working together on projects, hopping into random games, or just hanging out in voice chat, I’ve built lifelong friendships thanks to this community.

Picking a single favorite memory is almost impossible because there are so many, but one that always comes to mind is from the FiveM server (obviously). I ended up going undercover as a cop for a week inside Inkery’s mafia with Legend’s help. What made it great is that it was never really about the investigation.. Inkery knew what was going on the whole time. It was about creating a memorable story and making sure everyone involved had a great time. It all came to an end when Inkery killed off his character, and the almighty Austin Clarkson found himself under arrest because of it. Looking back, it was one of the most entertaining and memorable weeks I’ve ever had on the server.

Words can’t describe how grateful I am for everything this community has given me over the years. It’s introduced me to lifelong friends, unforgettable experiences, and opportunities I never expected when I first logged into the GTA server. Here’s to another 20 years!
