hey all, i have recently sold my computer and have $500 to build a new one, keyboard and mouse as well.
currently this is what i am looking at,
case: Antec 300 Illusion
psu: OCZ StealthXStream 600W
cpu:AMD Athlon II 240
ram:Crucial DDR3 1333MHz
gpu: ATI HD 4650 (will upgrade to maybe a 5850 for xmas)
mobo: ECS Elite Series 785G
HDD: 320GB WD
i am open to suggestions, but $500 is my budget

Looks fine to me....are you able to afford the new Phenom II's??? cuz if you are, you could put that in instead of the athlon. You might wanna beef up your PSU also, get the OCZ 700w, its not that much more expensive.

The regular Phenom CPU's were fail. That RAM is slower than the gaming DDR2 1066 ram because those timings are slow, "7-7-7-20" it should be "5-5-5-15"
He doesn't want a good GPU yet because hes upgrading soon to the new ATI 5 series supossedly ready to debut in 2 days.
The PSU is pretty much the same, i recommend getting the 700w version though.

and also, the 700W is just about 10 dollars more than my budget, but i will check it out

I would recommend a gigabyte board with solid state capacitors. As for the PS, I know everyone says bigger is better, but I'm running a Phenom II 940, HD3870, and two Hard drives off an Antec Earthwatts 430 without issue.
Aside from that, if you can afford a Phenom II you might get a bit more future proofing. I know jumping from an Athlon 6000 to this was night and day.

I love these for builds:

unless you are actually going to utilize it, quads are pretty pointless

skip the DDR3, it won't give you any better performance, see my other post about that. Save the money for your 5-series.

Everything else looks good.

Hes not paying that much more for DDR3 so he might as well go for it......hes only paying like $20 more or something.

Junk you really do hate quads lol, you never recommend them to anyone lmao. Too bad all of intels newer chips are only quads.
Games do actually utilize quad though, maybe not source games but most of the new games out and the ones coming out are going to be utilizing it. Quads are mainstream now, no more reason for a Duo core.

i want a cheap quad core, but i dont think my budget allows for one, the cheapest (true) quad is like $126 or something, but you can unlock the other 2 cores on the $100 P II 550, but thats not very good because there might be a reason the other 2 cores are locked (defective or otherwise)

ok here is the my new decision
Case: Antec 300 Illusion
Mobo: ECS 780G AM2+/AM3
Cpu: AMD Athlon II 240
Gpu: ATI HD 4650
Psu: OCZ StealthXStream 700W
HDD: WD 320GB
Ram: 4GB (2x2GB) OCZ DDR2 800 , either 5-4-4-15 or 5-5-5-15
but I am going to buy it tomorrow for the possible price drops, or would they not even matter?
