About a week ago i got a free computer from a friend but the case did not have any side panels on it. I am not sure of the model of the case because it does not say it anywhere. It is sapposed to have 2 panels, one one each side. I was wondering if they are necisary or not. Also i was thinking about pitting 2 peices of plexy glass on the side and drilling holes in it for vsntilation. Would i be ok with the plexy glass or should i just wait and buy a new case?

If the missing side panels expose your computer components I wouldn't trust them in it. Airflow is also better if the side panels are present because it creates a wind tunnel like effect as air goes from the front of the case to the back.

You could use plexi-glass if you want as long as you were happy with the outcome.

Post a pic of the computer and maybe someone can identify it. Also, I've seen case mods using acrylic as a side panel and they turned out pretty nicely.

It leaves you components exposed to all sorts of stupid accidents that could ruin them. Eventually something in your house will fly in and wreck something. Cooling isn't as good either.

That being said, having it just sit there isn't a big deal though. Plexiglas should work, but I'd save my time and just go buy an Antec 300.

i have an Antec 300, and i love it.
idle temps are around 25C and load temps have never gone above 44C
with all stock cooling fans

Here are some pics of the case:

maybe someone knows what it is.

EDIT: And don't make fun of my cable management I haven't got around to it yet, Ill do it when i get my new hard drives.

theres no model numbers on the bottom or back of the case

It kinda looks like a standard hp case

basically the side panels with fans help in the air flow and they direct where the air goes. You can run without having one side panel, the one that isn't behind the mobo if you want, theres nothing wrong with it. But you need the sided panel that covers the back of the mobo.

You can make ur own sidepanels, doesn't really need ventilation but if ur gonna make one, i would recommend making one with a slot for a fan and vent holes there. You should have a vent hole spot anyway for where the CPU is located on the side panel so the CPU fan can get cool air in.
