mic problem

For some unknown reason, windows will boost my mic by thirty decibels sometimes, which completely distorts it (not to mention deafening anyone i'm talking to in vent). I can go into levels in the sound options, and turn it back down, but I have no idea how to make it stay where it is. It'll boost in the middle of a vent conversation! This is getting pretty annoying, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Windows & Ultimate 64bit btw

is this only in vent, or do you get this in game as well?
does this happen in both OS's or just one?

I had a similar issue with an old mic and it was a semi-break in the line that depending on the bends in the wire would make me loud or quiet. If this is the case with you, it'll probably be easier to get a new headset or if you have a particularly nice headset you can frankenstein it & replace the line with one from a different headset, or make your own line from wires & shrink wrap from radio shack.

Edit: Have you tried updating your sound card drivers?
If you recently updated them & then the problem started, have you tried rolling back to the earlier drivers?

It happens in the os sound preferences, so yeah its in game and vent. Now, I never use the mic except vent, so I don't know if vent's doing it. The mic itself is fine. I didn't do drivers till after this started happening, and then I redid them. Didn't help.
