I have multiple sound cards in my machine, and I was wondering if there was a way to set the default sound output device in Source-based games. I don't want it using the same one as the default Windows one.
Well, I read the entire article, there's definitely some good stuff in there, unfortunately I didn't see how to change what sound device HL2/Source games use. I even tried changing the audio device in Steam settings, but that just opened up the Windows control panel and told me to change the default device :crying:.
Why do you need two soundcards? Another option would be to use an external sound switcher to select which speakers or input device you want to use at the time.

I have an X-Fi hooked up to a 5.1 system that I use for gaming. I also have two other sets of 2-channel speakers (one in one room, one in another) that I use to play music and watch videos, etc. I will be adding 1-2 more sets of speakers later. All these can be driven by the onboard sound. Ideally, I want the onboard sound set as the Windows default, but have games running through the X-Fi. Right now, I have the X-Fi set as default, and manually selected the onboard in WinAmp and my other media players. It works, but it's not ideal; sometimes I have to manually switch the defaults and I'd rather not do that.
I thought that this would be an easy way of fixing that, but if it's not possible, I'll move on to other options.
