Hello eGO's, I recently reformatted to try and fix problems, and when I re-installed XP, then SP2, I get that update that includes crap I do not want, BUTT I cannot "untick" it threfore it is trying to force me to download it.
Does anyone know of a fix or way to DELETE it from the update list because I am unable to do ANY updates without including this one.
BTw it includes the WGA "program" in it.

Thanks for any help

Well why on earth would you want to not get the WGA program? It sounds like the issue isn't with the WGA program but maybe your XP?

Only thing I am implying is that WGA is an authentication tool which will stop any updates from happening due to the OS. So my suggestion it has to do with your XP.

WGA(Windows Genuine Advantage) is required for Windows Update and other downloads(IE8). It installs before everything else to make sure your copy of Windows is legit. If you ever want to do updates, you will have to install WGA first.

I didnt have this problem when I installed xp originally a couple years ago, this must be a recent worm added to the SP2 package. But obviously no one knows how to "un-tick" it, so the question still stands unanswered........
thanks anyway for the responces.
Oh, and when i asked google, a BUNCH of replies came up stating that this program freezez up all future downloads, and keeps coming back saying it has not yet been installed even though the person keeps installing it.

I believe XP is on the SP3 package. I don't believe you need to dl SP2 first to install SP3. Try that.

"Nobody knows how to un-tick it" because it can't be unticked, plain and simple. WGA is Microsoft's way of combating piracy. And yes, this is something that Microsoft started doing after SP2. SP3 has WGA built in, but if you have SP2 or older, the Windows Update site makes you install it before it will let you download any updates. I have WGA on all of my machines and I have never had a single problem with it. Just install it and get it over with, unless of course, your copy of Windows isn't legit, which is the impression I am getting.

Sicilian WGA wasn't around till piracy of the OS became rampant and Microsoft took action. So if you installed your copy years ago during the time of SP1 it wasn't around yet if my memory serves me correct.

Worms by definition only replicate itself to take up space and open up back doors in systems. While it is possible you have have gotten it I don't think it came with SP2 unless you downloaded the data from another source other than Microsoft's own site.

Again I am not questioning the legitimacy of your XP just stating the facts I have learned over time.

Thank you CLARKO for the constructive input always,
I was trying to avoid the well known freeze before I even downloaded it, and I found a way to do it.
As far as the microsoft anti-piracy comment from "chappy", it amazes me the time/money/effort that went into that whole program, you'd think gates would have implemented that effort towards the inferior new OS he threw at the public that he called vista. The guys got multi trillions and hes worried about a few pirated copies of an older OS system... Big brother is watching(0)L(0)
Thanks again for your input CLARKO, it helped me figure out the CORRECT procedure to avoid the well documented problem with the formentioned download.
I DID get my SP2 from the microsoft website, direct from the link on my start menu FROM MY XP PRO CD. I guess I'm a noob, because I thought I HAD SP2, but apparently if I have to download it from MS, then I do not.
Anyway, problem solved and thanks again for your time and input, I now have to figure out whats up with my major drop in FPS in servers, I'll be posting that up soon with my specs.
