I am looking to upgrade my video card and thinking NVidea 9800, mostly because its the only one I have heard about.

? Motherboard Specifications, M2N78-LA (Viola)

That is the motherboard for my HP M8530F. It has one PCI express x 16 slot. Any advise as to the best selection for game performance would be appreciated.

What kind of Power supply do you have? I have a 9800gt 512mb and I like it I can run most games on high settings including Crysis.

well first we need to know wat type of PSU he has....im guessing its crap considering hes got an HP......the PCI-e x16 is fine

As for a card, anything from an ATI 4850 will do fine and they are dropping in price by the day since the new ATI 5 series are out

I would rather go with an gts series card. idk if theres a new gts series card but i know a gts 250 for sure. its cheap nd gets the job done.

(sry for reposting)

One PCI Express x16 graphics (for graphics cards)
Three PCI Express x1 (for cards such as network, sound, tv-tuner)
Supports an optional PCI extender card providing two PCI slots

since it doesnt specify in the product details, im guessing this board has 1.0 gen pci slots.

if this is in fact the case, pic 2.0 cards will work on your motherboard, but will not run at full potential.

Yep, but the only card that is bottle-necked by PCIe 2.0 x8 or PCIe 1.0/1.1 x16 is the GTX 295. Not sure about the new ATi cards though, it is possible the 5870 is, and the 5870x2 definitely will be. The high end Nvidia Fermi(GT 300) cards most likely will be as well.

Even with the GTX 295, it is only a 1-2% decrease in performance.

The new cards are barely using all 16 lanes capable by both the PCI-e 1.0 and PCI-e 2.0

Even so, the performance decrease by a PCI-e 1.0 will be very unnoticable as many reviews have said even with a card maybe like a 5870x2........they say the drop in performance is something like 2-5 fps which is nothing to those cards unless ur playing like Crysis, even so it will be unnoticeable

Board specs

Expansion slots One PCI Express x16 graphics (for graphics cards)
Three PCI Express x1 (for cards such as network, sound, tv-tuner)
Supports an optional PCI extender card providing two PCI slots.

Video graphics Integrated graphics using nVidia GeForce 8200
Supports concurrent use of dual displays connected to onboard DVI and VGA connectors.
Also supports PCI Express x16 graphics cards as independent graphics adapters.

NOTE: Either integrated graphics or the PCI Express x16 slot are usable at one time; they are not usable concurrently.

thats what it says. I relize power supply will need to be upgraded also and budget is what it costs. OK $500.00, or so.

I have a 9800GT on my computer, and i love it. It runs great with a Q6600.

Oh and thanks for the responses. I guess its the 5870x2 that is the winner?

Yes definitly the 5870x2 is a winner, the card will be crazy fast and i can't wait for it to come out also.
It should be coming out sometimes this month like the end or early early next month. Its supposed to arrive one month after the 5870 release.......the 5870 came out September 22, 2009
