Heres a quick and simple method I use to make a cool looking sunrise from space picture:
First make a new image (about 500x500), and paint it entirly black.
Next make a new layer then using the shape tool (Elipse), make a Blue sphere. Holding shift while draging will make a perfect circle. It will look like this:
Our next step is to make a new layer on top of the blue sphere, then by using a grunge splatter brush, put down extremly light blue clouds, making sure you use smaller sizes as you reach the horizon. The grunge brush set can be found here: http://www.brusheezy.com/

And heres (after trial and error) what the clouds should look like:
If you get some clouds off the blue circle just erase them.
Next right click on the blue sphere layer and duplicate it. Once you've done that, using the paint bucket tool, make the new duplicate sphere a lighter sky blue. After you've dont that select the sky blue sphere and go to 'filter-blur-glausian blur'. A screen like this should follow:
Hit ok then while still on the sky blue sphere turn down the opacity to around 30%(on the right near the layers). Once its barely visible, move it up slightly so its overlaping the blue sphere. Should look like this:
After duplicate the blue sphere once more, as we did before, only this time paint it a deep dark blue, almost black. Once you've got that down double click on the dark blue sphere. Check inner and outer glow and change the color to a yellow. Screen is as follows:
After your done, create a new layer beneath the dark blue sphere. Then using the Radial graident tool (circle one), make a graident of yellow from the center outward. The edges of the graident should barly peek over the spheres. You can goof with the opacity setting to correctly fit it.
After that, using the diamond graident tool, with the same color make a diamond graident just on top of the spheres. Once your done with that usings the brush tool add some stars or what ever you want. You can get star brush packs from the same sight as before. This is what your final product should look like:
