It may not be your router. What's between you and the router? Also, do you have a cheap cordless phone?

Could we get a lil more info... is it a B/G/N standard router? Also do you know if it is setup as an access point or an actual router (There is a difference) Also, what kind of card do you have in your computer?

Yeah - we'll definitely need a little more information. No use purchasing a new router if it's not going to help you.

Also consider what Thereven mentioned...there might be some electrical interference between you and your router (microwave, tv, hair dryer, etc). Also, if you have metal studs or a lot of poorly shielded electrical cabling in the walls it may not really matter how good the router is.

Only wireless N router i trust are D-link. I think Linksys did great with the G routers, but did poorly with Draft-N. Look up the D-link DIR-655 . I been using it for 6 months now and must say, it is nothing short of awesome. A ton of cool features , a ton of range, do yourself a favor and look it up. Great piece of equipment.

Wireless routers cause a lot of lag for gaming. Only use wireless if you HAVE to.

I haven't had the experience of wireless connections causing excess lag (if any). The only reason I switched back to a wired router was because I wanted my console wired up and didn't want to fork out 40-50$ for a wireless adapter. If you're experiencing lag issues over wireless you can try adjusting your QoS settings.

Possible, cheap solution: buy a bigger antenna. Increase your db and increase your range. Or you have a cheap (not necessarily inexpensive) router or wireless adapter. With my old Hawking's router I would get drops and major startup lag when my wife and I would start up a game at the same time. I found a Linksys G on CL and loaded it with Tomato. Works great.

I have a linksys router and a good pci wireless adapter, about $80, and i get 1 Mb speeds from my downstairs router. Usually having the router farther from the receiver is better as the signal bounces more and gives better coverage with mimo technology routers, or what you see as range boosters and so on. Just make sure your router has multiple antennas so it uses mimo technology, i forget what the commercial term was.

your computer could also be at a bad angle with your router. I remember reading that certain angles through walls between point to point could cause the devices to think that the router is hundreds of feet away when its not. Perhaps try adjusting your antennae. other than that suggestion, theres not a lot of info to work with :(
