i tried using the record command in the console while playing tf2 earlier today and it recorded into a DEM file. when i go to open the file and view it, it gives me this error "Setup file 'gameinfo.txt' doesn't exist in subdirectory 'hl2'. Check your -game parameter or VCONFIG setting."

what do i need to do in order to view this file?

Launch your TF2.

Make a random server of your own, just for you.
Open your console and type in "demoui"
Click "Load..." and find the demo you recorded.
Hit play.

Simple as that. For more in-depth stuff I can't help with though. Google is your friend.

if you can get access to the console without being in a game (sometimes I can, sometimes I can't), you can do the same thing there. You also may want to use the "startmovie movieName avi" command to record to demo to a video clip. You can look up how to use them more by searching for the command name followed by "team fortress"

we had a thread about it in the TF2 forum

open your tf2
type in "playdemo "name"" (no quotes)

type in demoui

and then you can also type in startmovie *name* avi
while watching it to convert it into an avi file while watching
