hopefully someone knows a fix for this cuz its kinda annoying.

Any of the source games I have won't fully close when I exit them.
I have to open task manager and kill hl2.exe in order to clear it out, or it eats my cpu.
The game does close and sends me back to my desktop as normal, its just it sits there in the background, presumabley attempting to run its shut down but just doesn't.
I've tried searching google but can't seem to find anything useful other than i use this method or this method but they never give an explanation. They just say use a bat file so you don't have to go into task manager and such but never explain how to code the bat.

O ya just cuz I know this will come up as the first idea, reinstalling doesn't work. I've had it installed on 4 computers and it does the same thing.

The computers i'm currently using it on are a vista HE 64-bit with core 2 duo
and vista HE 32 bit with umm i don't remember intel celeron mobile i think

I experience the same problem from time to time. I'm guessing it's a bug that needs to be fixed in an upcoming update. But then again, I think it has been an ongoing problem for a long time for me. I hope you find a fix for it though, cause I agree, it's a little inconvenient.

That's never happen to me before unless you mean you play a game, think you closed it but when you look on your steam friends, it still says your playing. Is that what you mean?

I've had this happen to me before. After a while it just stopped doing it. Or I got a new computer. I can't remember which it is.

It's a well-known bug with Valve games and Vista 64bit that they haven't gotten around to fixing yet.

Probably hoping it'll go away when people upgrade to Windows 7.

ya thats what happens and if you then open task manager you will see that hl2.exe is still running at like 90 cpu usage...

ya i guess seeing as how xp users don't seem to have this problem its probably a vista thing. I know vista stores stuff in some interesting places as part of security. It seperates files such as save games and such in one place and files you shouldn't touch in another. I agree they are probably going to wait until windows 7 to see if it clears up. although I would hope as a game manufacturer they would be a windows affiliate and already have windows 7 for testing. I have a friend who does software for a company and they go it like 5 months ago or so.
But I still think even if it does work properly on 7 that they should fix it, for those of us who say missed the free upgrade to 7 by like a month(i knew i shoulda waited:facewall:), and don't have the money to upgrade.

ok well I found a solution.. not the greatest but it works none the less.
its a simple batch file used to kill it. hl2.exe is the standard for any game using source. you can use this for almost anything just replace hl2.exe with the file you want to close.

1)open notepad
2)copy and paste the following

Code:
Title Killing hl2.exe
TASKKILL /F /T /IM hl2.exe

3)file->save as
4) change type from .txt to all files
5)save it as *****.bat replace stars with some name and save it

now when you close a steam game, instead of having to open task manager and find it just click on this file and it will close it.

I had the same problem, I reinstalled steam. VISTA, if thats what you have, causes major issues with steam. I really do not like vista but I gotta deal with it. But, a clean, reinstall of steam should do it, make sure you dont have to re download everything.

never had it not close but sometimes it will take it's time in the background closing and almost using a whole core to do it. but usually at most 30secs later it will be gone

This happened to me too. I just ignored it most of the time because it became a habit.

Now I have Windows 7 and it's never happened, except when I close Insurgency it gives me the 'HL2.exe Has stopped working'

Do you have DEP enabled? (Data Execution Prevention)

You can find it in the Control Panel, System, Advanced system settings, Advanced Tab, Performance.
