Alright, so I got a university where they crazy fast internet, as opposed to my house where I have 50kb/s if I'm lucky. What I'm wanting to do is download all of the installers for my games on my netbook while I'm on campus, then transfer all of them to my desktop. Seeing as how Borderlands alone is ~12gb, this would save oodles of time.

Problem being this, how do you get ahold of the exe's for those games? I mean, I have the steam client on my netbook, but how can I transfer the files in a usable way (data or installers) or even just get ahold of them?

I would just download them entirely and copy the entire steam folder to the HD you want it on.

OR

Just leave it downloading overnight on the computer you want it to run on.

Steam itself is a download manager and handles downloading of games. IIRC some games have their own patcher after steam has been ran to actually get into the game.

Simply install Steam on your laptop, then tell it to install the games you want to download. After they're done downloading, you can copy the .gcf's from your steamapps folder to your desktop. Start up Steam on your desktop, and it should recoignize the games.

By desktop you realize I mean a whole different computer, right? Like a big desktop; tower , monitor, key, board, mouse.

Doesnt matter what it is putty, as long as you can cut & paste over the .gcf files from the netbook to your desktop, thats all that matters. Once theyre on ur desktop, Steam should recognize them.

Won't my desktop need more files than the .gcfs? (I'm not really sure what those are).

A friend of mine said you can't just copy and paste all of the game files to the other computer. Is he right or wrong?

It's easy...

Install them on your laptop at your university.

Then right click on the game(In Steam Games List), click backup game files. Follow instructions and choose where to put the backups.

Then move the backups to your home PC and run them and it will install the entire game. It even auto installs steam too I think.

Unfortunately.... the gcfs are only for source games made prior to l4d.

Any other game will need to go into your steam>steamapps>common>GAME HERE folder

Imo, the best way to go about this would be to copy your entire steam folder into the program files folder on your netbook. But if it doesn't work out, downloading them again is always a sure-fire solution.

just download them via steam with you netbook than grab the whole steamapps folder in your steam folder and copy it to your desktop steam folder.

the steam apps folder contains all game data for installed steam games
