ok ive been having 1 of 3 problems with my internet connectivity

1. limited or no connectivity - where there computer just doesnt want to connect to the internet at all

2. dropping out of internet - internet basically crashes and comes back, randomly and without warning

3. the newest one, it lags - basically the internet lags and no matter what settings ive tried it doesnt change and still spikes to high pings and latencies

if you can help me with any of these that would be great, it jumps between the three. :(

Ah yes, I had the same problem multiple times with my WiFi. Every now and then i wouldn't be able to connect to anything, just was able to see my routers setup pages, or I would get connectivity, but it would be slower than 56k dial-up. Turns out, it was the WiFi doing it, as the normal connection speed is usually 54mb/s, I would be getting 1mb/s - 10mb/s during these lag/choke spikes.

They only way I was able to fix it was by restoring my laptop to a previous state and it would stop, only to pick up a few months later.

I abandoned wiFi because of this problem, and now both our routers don't work, so I'm happy :D

Hey Guy, what router you using? please give us the model number as well as your notebook model . Hopefully we can get a better idea about the problem. I had a netgear wireless G router way back that did the exact same thing. Switched to a Linksys G and it worked perfectly for a couple years , then moved up to the Dlink DIR 655 . Linksys makes better G routers and Dlink does better with the N's .

I had the same problems with my Belkin N router, I just sent it back and got another and the problem hasn't happened since.

You could call your ISP and ask them to reset the connection, it wouldn't hurt and may actually make your speeds faster.

I would try to update the drivers for your wireless card as well as update the firmware for the airport router.

Let me know if you need help doing either of those.

Actually FIRST you should run Malwarebytes Anti-malware. Download: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Malwarebytes-AntiMalware/1186760019/1

Make sure you run the update and do a full scan. Spyware can cause issues with your internet connectivity.

Let me know if you need help with any of this.

hmm ill try doing the call my ISP and that, and ive already updated my drivers and Firmware, but I will try the malware. thanks guys! :)

Are you connected wirelessly or via cat-5? My suggestion is to try to connect your computer directly to your modem and see if you're still having issues. If when connected directly to your modem your issues cease, then your router has gone bad and needs to be replaced.

Actually first things first, have you tried to simply power cycle your router? Simply unplug it for about 5 seconds and plug it back in.

yea Shadowblade i do the power cycle all the time and it still doesnt fix it, and yes im wireless and yes when i hook it up direct it works fine but all the other computers often are working wirelessly while im not. and to aikepah the malware thing found some stuff but removing the bad stuff didnt fix it :-/

I had a problem like this, my internet would either not work or be like dial-up

Way i fixed it:

1. tested with hardwiring to modem, still problems (so wifi wasnt the issue)

2. Called AT&T (insert ISP here) and got a new modem

3. problem solved

^ Exactly.

If the modem works fine without the router, then it's the router causing problems. So, see if it's still under warranty and fine that trusty receipt somewhere and get a new one :)

I've had to do this several times because Belkin and their support is pretty bad.

He said the problem isn't the router/modem as it is only his computer having issues. Other wireless computers working, and it works when hardwired. So the problem seems to be with his computer/wireless card. is this computer still under warrenty? If it is I would call whoever you bought it from and see if you could get a replacement wireless card. If it isn't under warrenty I would try to get another wireless card to put in and test with, if it works with a diff wireless card then we know the problem was your wireless card. If it doesn't work with another wireless card then the problem is something on the computer.

What type of security encryption are you using for your wireless? You may want to try different encryption types and levels to see if the pre-processor for your wireless card is running beyond its limits. This can cause the symptoms you are experiencing assuming;

-Other computers work fine using the same router / WiFi port.
-Direct-connection via Ethernet causes no issue.
-MAC Address authentication is NOT being used for security.
-You're using AES-level encryption currently (aka WPA2).
-You're NOT using WEP-level encryption.

If changing encryption types doesn't help, please let us know.
