Connecting

So, I've been having issues connecting to some of our TF2 servers. When I click to join the server it starts loading like normal, but it gets hung up on 'parsing game info' and doesn't stop doing that. It'll sit there for minutes and not get anywhere.

Any ideas?

Gah, I had that problem at one point, but I cannot remember immediately how I fixed it. I'll try to remember by the time I get home today, and I'll post again. Until then though, try verifying the integrity of the game cache or reinstalling. Oh, also, can you connect to other people's servers?

Yeah, it seems to be a sporadic problem. Occasionally, the game just takes forever to load up. I'll restart and sometimes it'll be fine. I just want to not run into this problem at all. Spending five minutes loading up a game just kills me.

The retrieving server info thing is also while you're loading and stuff, thats why it takes so long.

Ok, anyway I'm back home, I'm looking into the problem as I know I found a fix somewhere one time. I'll get back to you ASAP

Well, I'm running through dorm internets so even if that is the problem I can't do anything about it. Also, I don't actually get an error message, it just loads. And loads. And keeps loading. I'm tempted to try re-installing but I don't have the disk with me. I'll keep looking though.

Well, its a steam game, so you can just delete it and redownload it, although on dorm net that might take a while :(

EDIT: On a hunch, try putting this into your autoexec

rate 25000
cl_cmdrate 66
cl_updaterate 66
cl_interp 0.015
net_compresspackets 0

Its something I used to fix my lag issues and stop me from repeatedly getting d/c'd from the servers, it might help.

EDIT2: Doh, should've thought of this, make sure TF2/steam is an exception in all firewalls and stuff if you haven't already, as sometimes this problem is caused by that. If you want to check whether the firewall is the problem or not you can also turn off your firewall for a few minutes to try and load into a server. This has obvious risks of course, although only turning it off for a few minutes if you're only going to a TF2 server I'd consider pretty safe.

I'm starting to think it's a firewall problem. I have just found out that Windows Firewall is starting itself without my permission. I have something better and I never wanted to deal with the idiocy that is Vista Firewall. I will observe the firewall more closely from now on, however.

Yeah, windows firewall does that to me too :glare:

Windows Firewall: I want to go out and play with the big kids!
Me: NO, BAD Firewall... BAD... down... now go sit in the corner, and don't you dare interfere with my internet!
Windows Firewall: *runs away sobbing* I'll show you! I'll go stop a virus! *runs out the door and into the street only to get run over by the first virus it sees*
and there was much rejoicing... yaaaaay (monty python FTW :P)

Anyway, back to serious mode,
I have to keep manually turning it off each time I notice it pop up :chair:

You sir...are very mean to windows firewall...i believe "it" needs an apology...like now >:C

Suddenly started happening again. I did the same thing as before, checking all the ports and firewalls, and it should be good. Not sure why it's decided to hate me again. It's also not happening to every server. For instance, I managed to get into 2fort IR but it won't let me connect to the Auction server. Not sure what's up, I've been searching Steam's Support site and nothing is turning up. Any more ideas?

EDIT: Reinstalling TF2 right now. Praying really hard, too.

Well, I'm reinstalling TF2 for the third time this year. Second time this week. I'm so glad that Steam has no problems at all. It's such a nice, user-friendly and rewarding program to use. Maybe it's so user-friendly that speaking nicely about it will encourage it to work even more efficiently.
