Alright, so im unable to install Warhammer 40000 dawn of war (number 1) on my windows 7 pro 64 bit machine.
I slipped the disk in and attempted to install, to which the installer kept freezing and needing to be shut down. After which i opened and closed my DVD tray to restart the installation, figuring it was just a random thing, and then i was unable to access ANYTHING on the disk...nothing worked.

The manual has no troubleshooting help because its located on the disk in a readme file, however i was unable to access it because again i was unable to access ANYTHING. Im not exactly sure what would be causing this problem, and i've found very little help on google regarding this problem (though im terrible at searching for things) so im asking if others have any suggestions.
I know that there are a lot of gamers in our community that still play this game, so are you able to on windows 7 pro 64 bit?? Im completely baffled, and very very :facewall:

By being "unable to access" can you tell us the specific message?
Or can you not see your drive at all, or?...

Have you tried restarting your computer ever since?
Have you tried another CD/DVD/Blu-Ray to confirm that it is the DOW CD and not your CD/DVD Drive?

yes it is not my drive, it is only this game/disk that has problems. the installation will work up to a point (about a tenth of the way) then it freezes and gives me the message eventually that the windows installer has encountered a problem and needs to close blah blah. after that i'll be unable to access anything on the disk, just by opening up the drive folder and if i click on anything, like the readme file, it opens notepad but not the file, and just eventually states, "Cannot open the D:\readme.txt file. Make sure a disk is in the drive you specified."
it will give me that message until i restart the computer, then i can actually get it to start installing again...but its always the same story. it stops and doesn't move regardless of how long i let it wait, but the installer will eventually close out.

Can you confirm the CD itself is not scratched or otherwise unreadable?
When DOW locks up on your CD drive, can you put another CD in it and it'll show?
Or after the Installer craps out your whole * drive disappears/malfunctions until restart?

Edit: If you have a demo of the game, please make sure you remove it.
Edit2: After it restarts, have you tried locating the disk, right clicking the installer and hitting "Install as Administrator"?
Edit3: According to the Microsoft website "Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade" is compatible with both 32x and 64x.
Edit4: Some Virus scanners interfere with the installation of this game on WinXP SP2 and above. If this applies to you, can you temporarily suspend your AVS to see if it still happens?
Edit5: According from several help forums what someone did was uninstall the CD/DVD driver via Device Manager, restarting and having Win7 install the drivers. After that, it worked like a champ. Except he refers it to getting hung at 2 percent.

well i'll try to uninstall the driver then and see what that can bring me, because everything else doesn't apply
i have the gold edition too so its both the game and its expansion together blah blah. yes the drive is fine even when the DOA install messes up, not scratched, no antivirus, not sure why i would need or it would help to "install as administrator" since i run windows under admin, plus it can start to install itself blah blah.

i'll post a reply once im able to uninstall/reinstall the dvd driver

UAC doesn't refer to whether or not you log in as admin, it's just a pain in the butt and annoying.

UAC has also been tracked to being a culprit at fail installs.

anyway, its over, i've just repacked the game and now its away....too much trouble for what its worth
btw it didn't work to run the install as admin

Aww, I wanted to figure it out. ;(

OK, thanks anyways though!
