Ok, so ever since seeing these in a friend's studio I fell in love with them. They remind me of HAL 3000. :)

I wanted to get a pair to back-up all my music projects, but put them in RAID 1 Configuration (1:1 redundancy). However, Google has shown me a few people complaining that they failed on them in a year. Obviously, I'm not going to keep them running 24/7 so I think they'd probably last a lot longer than that.

My current Maxtor External HDD has been my only backup for ~5 years now, and makes like 2 clicks on start-up, but I think that is the little armature thing parking/unparking. Nevertheless, I'm paranoid and need another backup of all my sound libraries.

I'm a total n00b to RAID arrays, so:
  1. What RAID controller would be the best bang-for-buck for my purposes (backing up large audio and project files)
  2. If LaCies are in fact awful, are there any other enclosures out there that can have a similar style? I'm rather shallow when it comes to External HDDs and aesthetics matters to me.

*EDIT: Note that my computer is a bit old now and does NOT have a PCI-E slot, only PCI.

External HDDs are not meant to be raided. While it is possible, you will run into more headaches than it is worth. Extra power cables, cables running around to usb/other ports, etc. I'm going to assume your computer does not have any esata ports unless you choose to use an add-in card. The PCI would be quickly saturated.

Get a few of them to use individualy or run backups. I just don't see a raid of them working out.
