thanks so much

What he said :)

Other than that, before you can just go and make a weapon or a hat, you have to learn a modeling program and how to skin. If you really want to learn, I suggest a free program called Blender for modeling, try and see what you can do with that, if it comes out well then maybe you can send some stuff to the contribute page. But I'll tell you right now, it is not an easy or fast process at all.

Agreed. It ain't easy. I've been studying Autodesk Maya 2010 for two months now, because all I really really want is to work at Valve and they require experience in Maya for that so..
It's not fun, it's not easy - but in the end, I hope I'll be rewarded for my efforts. :P

I used to work with blender a long while ago, and it was difficult. Maya, so I hear, is equally so. I myself was thinking of relearning that stuff for the same purpose, but one step back in the program told me to continue contributing to TF2 in other ways. If you have an idea for an item or what have you, you might try to find someone who can model, and see if they'll model it for you. Then, once you submit it, you can be credited for the original idea, and perhaps everyone involved will get a special version of it. That isn't a promise, but I believe that's how it works.

Next year ill be taking a class that involves coding and blender. Its a gaming design class. Hopefully i can make a TF2 item :).

I can use blender too.

I used blender, but I have a friend that is super pro in Maya that is going to teach me. Frankly this whole 3D TF2 thing is very interesting and I think it's fun to have a chance to make a weapon that would appear in game.

It's pretty easy to use any 3D modeling software once you get the hang of it.
