ping/latency help

OK, so when i'm playing either dods or css, i get ping spikes, shotting into the 300-900 range. when i play these games, i don't download anything, or have an internet window open. what should i do?

also, my ISP is at&t, and when this happens, i usually reset my modem and computer. this however is unsuccessful now.

It may be your rates are too high,

try opening console and typing in cl_updaterate 50

Are you trying to search for servers in game? Even though you might not have opened up a Find Servers window, it still might be searching. If so, click on Stop Refresh.
