How much RAM needed?

As long as you have a decent CPU (Pentium 4 2.4gh + or the equivalent Athlon), you should have no trouble with a that video card. I would say lower your settings (take of Antialiasing and HDR first then go from there).
 
What operating system are you running pwntback mountain? I ask becasue the total amount of RAM that a 32 bit operating system can support is 3.4 GB (or something around that i cant remember the exact figure) due to memory addressing issues. If you are running a 64 bit OS, like Vista or Xp 64 bit then you could support it fine.

Oh by the way your system sounds totally killer! How much you put it together for?
 
Hey Jimbo I am running a 32 bit with XP Pro and no plans of going to Vista what so ever until my next comp upgrade years later. I put this piece by piece and guess it ran about $1600 or so. I will upgrade my vid card to the 8800 GTX in 2 more months by sending it back to EVGA and paying the diffrence. I remeber my $ 2500 486 SX 16 mhz system back in about 1989. My Diamond Viper top of the video card with a whopping 2 Megs of video ram was about $300 back then. Lol Memory was $100 per meg at one point and I only had only 2 megs of ram. Let's not forget the Commadore 64 original Mac and Mac Plus.
 
Cool, well i probably wouldnt bother with more RAM then. I may upgrade to 4GB becasue im getting vista pretty soon (i can get it free through unversity so why not? lol)
 
2 gigs of ram is way enough. the other 2 slots are probably SD slots. Putting ram in them would be useless cuz you need to either choose SD or DDR!
 
Hmm OutbreaK? I haven't heard of mixed RAM motherboards before. If you pop open your case look how many slots are right around your current sticks of RAM. Most motherboards have 2-4 RAM slots and their types depend entirely on which motherboard you have.
 
yeah i agree. it's been proven that dual channel and lower latency have minimal performance increases. i run c2d 6600, 1gig ram, 7900gs all on a evga 680i mobo.
 
How do you figure dual channel has little advantage over a single channel memory configuration? I agree the performance difference is nothing steller, maybe 10% increase but it doesn't cost anymore to purchase a matched pair of RAM than it does a single massive stick. Why not go for the performance gain if it won't cost you much if anything more? I know some in some applications it's VERY noticable when you're running in single channel mode. Fedora runs like crap on a single channel configuration and has a noticable performance increase when changed to dual channel.
 
i don't know what happened...but when i upgraded from 1 gig up kingston value ram to 2 gig (2 x 1gb) sticks of kingston hyper x....i noticed a nice difference...as for dual vs single...i have NO CLUE...lol, if you want more ram check out newegg.com :)

Your difference was from the quantity. HyperX vs ValueRAM = 1-3% performance gain for a LOT more money.
 
I got my new ram but i can't fit it in right(i've got the right type),i'll have to get it fitted in elsewhere when i get paid but for now i'm happy with 1 Gig for a few more weeks.
 
I agree, a waste of money. I have 512 in mem and 512 on the video card, its more than enough. Rather than blowing the doe on memory, buy a new HD or video card.

DUDE - which Diamond card? I loved Diamond back in the day. Best card ever was the Fire GL 1k w/16MB of vid memory. I used that card way longer than any card I've ever owned, it was just so freaking fast! Yes, those where the days....

just ram, 1 gb is good 2 gb is waslte 4 gb burn your money.
 
Just bumped my ram up to 2gigs and it's not a waste at all,Fear,Company of heroes and BF2 run way much better with 2gigs.

1gig is fine for Source but it's really the minimum for pc games these days.
