Not a standing army tactic, but they sure as hell do it in Iraq/Afghanistan. Instead of C4 though, they use 155mm artillery shells. So, yes, for some IRL it is a real tactic. :O

Offtopic: I was at FOB Grizzly in Iraq during 2008. Wasn't a fobbit though, my squad/platoon rotated through ASO patrols, QRF, and towers. Towers were as close to being on the fob all the time as I got, and they weren't fun. Freaking hot in those things.

I was at the receiving end of that yesterday. I missed the ATV coming straight at me. The driver exited and exploded the ATV at my tank.
