Yay, another headset issue.
This is my story. I bought a logitech headset for €30, that plugs in the red and green port things. Does work, but on my vista laptop (that I use all the time) the sound is very very silent. I already turned up the volume in the sound tab, still very silent. Mic volume on steam is on max too.
So I bought a new one for €50, a behind-the-head type, you can plug this one in both the usb port and the red and green things, but it only works with usb. No problem, volume is fine etc, but it's too big for me: it falls off my ears and it's not big enough to put it over my head. For now, I'm using it for gaming and I put the other one on for listening to music because it's too annoying.
I'm really pissed off because the store won't take either of them back because the package has been opened, even though I did it really carefully. I don't really want to spend any more money on this..so any help would be very much appreciated.

very very silent ut still able ot be heard? or do you mean completely mute?

you say you turned the volume up in the sound tab but by that do you mean you opened the full sound mixer? Because that mixer only shows (dumbly) the currently active applications. What I would try is opening DOD:S and then alt tabbing out, opening the sound mixer and verify that the sound for dod:s isnt muter while the master volume remains at mox (can happen). Also, you should be able to specify the volume for the individual ports - but tis problem is wakky in a few areas.

It just basically sounds as if your saound card isnt working or the voume is muted or turned low in other areas.

I might be happier if I could see a screen shot of your sound settings as well as your sound mixer settings while alt tabes out of dod:s. That way I can try to understand better.

I am surprised the store wont take them back. Here in the US they take anything back and I proved it today. I bought the Barracuda headphones (Razer) and without their 'special sound card for ANOTHER $199' - they were horrible. I would be interested if anyone else has them just to compare my experience. Anyways I brought them back and got a 'highly recommended' pair off the internet. They arrive in 2 days, hopefully they are good.

Well I can hear that it works, I can hear myself saying something when I test it out on steam, but it's so silent that it's impossible to hear clearly.
I'm not really sure what you mean with the sound mixer, isn't that just headphones/speakers volume? Anyway, I'll take a few screenshots, maybe that helps:

And Haggis, I wish they'd take things back here, really..when I bought it, I asked the guy in the store if I could bring it back if it didn't work, and he said "yeah sure". And when I call back about it, they say they can't sell it anymore if the package has been opened because they can't sell it anymore. Makes me angry.

Screen shot was very helpful - that is what I was talking about. Alot fo people though will adjust the volume from the task panel not form the full sound mixer and get terms mixxed up.

I just wanted to be sure - looks like you have everything set right, unless there are multiple microphones in your recording tab. It could be that you have one of two microphones with high recording volume and the other at low... I barely saw that your microphone said "conexant" as the brand,.. I thought that was a modem company not a sound card company but I could be wrong. It may be that you have your microphone plugged into your modeem instead of your sound card. Some modems do have mini rca jacks.

you can right click on the recording tab right on your microphne and check off "show disabled (and connected) devices" and then you can see all of the recording places availible. It may even turn out that you are trying to use front panel sound but it isnt hoocked up right or other various things.

Oh I don't know about Conexant, but it seems to be the brand/driver for my internal speakers/headphones too. Conexant High Defenition Audio. I also have a wave-out mix thing (when i show the disabled things too), but I already tried to use it and it echoes out all sound on my computer, including the game and things other ppl say. Even when I turn my sound off. (if you understand what i mean ><)

Well then you are probably using the correct devices, but can you tell us what which microphone plug you are using for your microphone?

Basically, since your USB headphones works but the standard ones does not, it fairly narrowly limits the problem to the jack and the jack settings. You did already mention that you are using the green and red ports. Since this is a laptop there probably is only 1 set of sound ports (unlike desktops which suually have some in front and back) so i guess i just answered my own question.

Safe to assume the red jack you are using might also be considered pink? Or do you have red and pink? Microphone is usually pink.

I am still looking at your last screen shot and you have so much less informaitnt han I have - my volume mic area also shows me a picture of the jack it uses, alows me to mute, tells me which driver it uses etc. I dont know it is hard without actually being abel to be there, but it sounds liek you have really crappy onboard sound. I'm not sure what the problem is.

The ports I'm using actually don't have a colour, but there's a mic and headphone icon next to them, so it are probably the right ports.
When I go into settings, it shows a bit more information: (this time with my headset plugged in the usb port too)

I already went to the shop with my laptop and they just opened sound recorder, rubbed the mic a bit and said that it works fine.. my sound works fine otherwise, but yeah the drivers do seem to be a bit crappy. =/

Well, you can also try pluggin your mic into the line in port if you have one - you can plug mics into line in but NOT line in things into mic jack.

but then again a laptop might not have a line in jack (normally its the blue one). How can your not be color coded?

when i switched from xp to vista on mmy desktop the same thing kinda happen with me but i messed around with it before i bbought a nnew pair, what happen with me was i normally use the front ports for my headset, and when i wennt to vista i could only use the front headphone jack and nnot the mic jack, evenntually through a lonng process i gave up and plugged them in to my rear ports, every thing worked out A-O-K hopes it helps, if u have mmore thann onne set of ports try the other set
