Need opinions: What should I do about my friend and the power supply he "lent" to me?

Alright, so here's the deal:

About three or four months ago, I built my gaming computer. The only thing I was missing was a power supply, and my friend had an old one, so he told me, "You can borrow it until you get your own." I've been using his 500W power supply ever since then.

Now, he wants money for it. $40. Personally, I think this is ridiculous.

First off, it's used, of course. Covered in scratches.

Second, I could buy a new 600W power supply for the same price on Newegg.

Third, and most importantly, he never said I would have to pay money for it. I understand that I have been borrowing it for quite a while, but I never would have borrowed it in the first place if I knew that he would want money for it later on. He never gave me a time limit on how long I could borrow it for, either.

So, the way I see it, I have a couple of options:

I could just pay him the $40, which I really don't want to do, and I never will.

Or, I could say, maybe, give him the power supply back and order my own. Sure, I'd be without my gaming computer for maybe a week, but I'm not going to die because of that.

What do you guys think? If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to share them.

Thanks! :)

Buy new power supply, give his back. He is probably joking about the $40. If he isn't, slap him with a $5 dollar bill.

Oh-ho, he is definitely not joking. He's been going on about this $40 for weeks. I even told him that I won't pay him for it considering the circumstances, and he still has yet to drop it. Today even he told/threatened me that he would be by my house sometime today to pick the money up.

I just won't answer the door. I'm going to the bank today. I'll deposit some money into my account and order a new power supply and give his back to him once I get it. He can try to sell it for $40 on his own, then. Jerk. :P

Thanks for your opinion, Cow. :)

Don't let this stupid thing get between you two.

Buy your own psu, give him his back. Buy him a drink or something to thank him for lending it to you.

Order the new power supply, then when you get it. Wrap the old one up in newspaper and give it back to your "friend". Tell him thanks for the loaner and being really classy about it.

Well let's see...

  1. You borrowed his PSU with no intention of ever getting your own
  2. He would like you to pay him a modest sum for it now that you have pretty much decided to keep it
  3. 500w PSUs can cost upwards of $120 for a nice one
I don't see any problem with him asking for money or for you to get your own. You're the one who has wronged him. What if he asked to borrow your computer, but then didn't give it back till 4 months later? Wouldn't you feel a bit put-out?

If you do buy your own, the least you can do is buy him a candy bar or something as an apology for keeping it for so long.

He stated that his friend's psu was old, and he did not need it anymore. A good friend shouldn't be asking money for something like that.

How do you know his friend was not planning on using it to build a second box? Nothing was said about him not needing the PSU back. That's why he let him borrow it rather than give it to him forever.

How do you know exactly how old the PSU is? It could be that the friend bought a PSU, then upgraded a week later.

A good friend should not borrow something with no intention of ever giving it back.

I have every intention of giving it back. Rather than my friend asking for money for it, though, he could have just asked me to give it back to him.

Yes, but I wouldn't say, "Hey, give me $600 for my computer which I said you could borrow. You've had it for a long time, so you'll have to buy it from me now." I would've simply asked him to give it back to me.

You could order it, tell him to wait a week, and return it once your new one comes.

Or, you can just return it to him. I don't know why he's asking $40 from you.

What a great friend to ask you for money for something he knowingly let you borrow. Well, I would order a new one for you, tell him that it is on the way and give him his once your new one shows up as the person above me (too lazy to scroll) said. :)

You should order a new one,buy him a drink or treat him to a movie for lending you the power supply, all well end well =)

Legally he cannot ask you for money for the item AFTER he gave it to you for free, well to borrow. He didn't even say for "How Long" you could borrow it for, so simply he's trying to rip you off. I advise you A, get a new friend, and B get your own power supply then C give the old one back after you get a new(er) one.

I disagree with a lot of the opinions.

He never GAVE it to you. He LOANED it to you. If I had a friend who was in that situation, I also would loan him my power supply.

But the thing is...i would assume my friend would be getting one pretty soon.

Now, you say you could just order one for $40? As somebody else stated, I don't know of a decent PS that's only $40. Can you post the link to it?

What "I" think, is your friend, for $40, is basically GIVING you that power supply. I think is you who has taking advantage of your friend, not the other way around.

Just my 2 cents, nothing personal.

Yeah, I'm with xosniper on this one. He's being an A class butticus Mcmunchikins
and if he's going to be a baby about his loaner, then just give it back to him and thank him for his endearing maturity that will go down through the ages as : Biggest Asshole Ever.

Hahaha. Besides, new Power Supply sounds PreTTy sweet.

Ahaha, Lady, your post made me laugh.

@DragonD: I was thinking this one, or something like it. I'm not very good with power supplies, so maybe it's not actually decent, I don't know, but it seems about the same (except 600W).

Another problem I have with him wanting money for it is that I think he wants the money from me for the wrong reason. I think he'd be happy to take it back from me and try to sell it for $40 himself. But he's too lazy to go through the trouble of selling it to someone else. Personally, I think he's trying to take advantage of me to immediately get the money he wants. "Hey, dRastic has my power supply, and I 'need' money naow, so why not try to get it out of him?" Basically I think that's what he's thinking. He bumped the price down to $25, but I still think he's asking for the money from me for the wrong reason.

At this point I don't want to make any deal with him. I just want to give him his power supply back and order my own. I will cordially thank him and tell him how much I appreciate his letting me borrow it, but considering the circumstances, I refuse to purchase it from him.

Don't forget to wrap it in newspaper.
