For some time now I've been a "wait and see" kind of game shopper. Waiting only until all the reviews come out to decide my buy, with the exception of Red Dead Redemption (because the first was way underrated, so is the second arguably). I now have learned with a little research that it isn't uncommon for publishers to bribe companies for high review scores.

For instance. Ubisoft tried to bribe a German computer magazine with a review copy in exchange for high scores, something the company refused and publicly outted them for. The same has happened on two seperate occasions with Edios, who tryed to bribe many reviewers for Kane & Lych (gamepro employee was fired for being honest) and Batman Arkham Asylum (outted before the fact).

FOr the longest time I thought that vg reviews were like movie reviewers and that there wasn't any real way to bribe them, and now that it seems I'm wrong who am I supposed to trust?

That Kane & Lynch thing also happened with GameSpot, with one of their reviewers getting fired for giving the game a low score.

I usually don't trust the reviewers, but the people who actually played the game. Sites like IGN and GameSpot have an option for users to review the game, which I really look for.

I actually trust user reviews less than the professional ones and even those I take with a grain of salt. Gamers usually have a love it or hate it mentality, meaning that it's either a good game or the worst game that they've ever played. Sure every once in a while you'll get someone who will call a spade a spade, but those are few and far between. Even still, you get people so caught up in fanboyism that it'll blind them to the quality of the game.

The truth is, if you want a game and the aggregate scores look to be somewhat positive...then get it. Sure, you're sometimes left with a mediocre product, but those can still be fun to play.

I trust GameInformer the most, mainly because their reviews come out at the same time as the games.

As for that Edios thing, I understand Kane and Lynch, but why Batman? With or without bribes, that's still going to be a great game

I trust Zero Punctuation the most. Yahtzee Shows no mercy.

I'm with AnotherAsian on this. GameInformer has the most reliable reviews out of all the major Magazine/ review companies. They also preview the games months, sometimes a year or more before it even comes out. This allows you to grasp the concept, quality of the game pretty far in advance. I can generally tell if a game is going to be good from the articles they write.

Actually on second thought, Gamesradar is the best review site I've found.
