I've got several titles on Origin including the BF2 expansions, BF2142, Northern Strike, MOH. I've been able to download all of those past the one year mark.

Well that parts good. Question though, do you have to have origin running to run these games (or is that what they are doing now) or do you actually download an installer file that you keep on your harddrive to install from?

For all of my previous games, it just downloaded the games. Running Origin while playing is not required. As a matter of fact I have BC2 set up in Steam so I start it from there so I can use Steam chat when in game.
I remember needing the CD to play BF2. are u sure u didn't buy it or one of the expansions on EA Down loader?

Origins
EA wants to start using their own steam like software called "Origins", I have it already because i forced forced to download it to play the BF3 alpha, it's pretty bad, sluggish and glitchy. But it's still beta, hopefully it will be better when BF 3 goes live.

Anyone that bought EA games through the old EA downloader is using it. I have it because I bought the BF2 expansions, BF2142, Northern Strike and BC2 through it. For those games it was just used to download the game and was not required to be running when playing any of those or even to start any of them. Isn't that the case with the BF3 alpha? Personally, it's not slow or sluggish for me.

EA is just trying to pass steam up in sales which it will not do. Steam has better games then most of EA's buggy games

More likely it's due to the current financial times and the need to cut expenses where they can. I'm sure Valve takes a percentage of sales for games that EA sells through Steam. By selling through their own digital distribution system, they are getting more of the profit, plus it's one less headache they have to worry about when there are updates. One less source to have to update means less work for EA, which may even mean they can have a smaller staff or a staff that can concentrate on other things since no one has to focus on getting the Steam patch out. I sometimes prefer non-Valve games to come from other digital distributors, such as Direct2Drive because a lot of times when non-Valve games are sold on Steam, and there's an update, the update for Steam users can be delayed from those with retail or other digital sources.
I used to work for a Game Server Provider, and on MANY occasions, I saw game patches delayed due to the process involved in getting a patch cleared through Valve.

Well, I think I am gonna bite the bullet and just do the digital download through origin. If I dont have to have it running, I really wont care. Although I did see that they are going to do a similar ingame overlay type deal like steam, which makes me wonder if I will have to run it or if it will be optional.
And Grosskopf, I would highly doubt this has anything to do with being able to roll out game patches quicker. In fact your first assumption about money is probably the only real explanation.

On my end its not about hating on it, its about already having my other games on steam, having a friends list set up, being familiar with it and the appearance of almost being forced to use a duplicate service because I want to get BF3. Its really more of an annoyance than anything and just me not wanting to eventually end up with multiple distribution services that do the same thing.

The reason I mention the patches is because as an employee of a GSP, I was on the email reflectors for a lot of different games, where the dev's kept us up to date and quite often, I would see the reason for a delay in patching a game was because they were waiting for Valve to ok the patch. If they didn't do that, then you'd have scenarios where everyone else would have the update and Steam users would be left waiting for it. That also happened quite frequently.

If it's anything like the other games distrubuted by EA on Origin, Origin will just download the program to your hard drive. You run the game from the desktop like any other game and can add it to Steam. I bought BC2 on Origin (EA Downloader at the time) and I run it from Steam. Steam overlay works in it too.
