On my laptop, if I leave it open but let the screen turn off for about an hour and then come back, these lines appear.

Clicking the mouse once makes these go away. A fix would be nice, but I'd like to at least know why this is happening.

The lines appear to be corrupt video memory or a graphics driver issue.

The usuals:

Update video drivers.
Turn off screensaver.
Maybe check if there's a BIOS update available.
???

what you are experiencing is called Artifacting. It is due to an issue associated with the cpu, gpu, or ram. The artifacts are common signs of overheating and will lead to an early demise of the unit if the yearly maintenance is not being done. Because most laptops are portable ovens, issues with Video RAM, warpage of the mobo, and other various heat related problems occur. Aswell, Laptops need to be checked and cleaned for dust buildup just like Desktops, atleast once a year.

as an example.. several HP laptops are known for failing Video RAM, and mobo warpage due to heat buildup and the inefficiency of its removal.

What Laptop is it? ie, HP, Dell, Alienware , etc.
