Building a new computer i need help with Video Cards

Well yeah i'm building a new computer, i have all the parts except for a case and a power supply which ill be getting today. I had a video card ( 7900 GS ) except one of the capacitors broke off inside the box and i had tried to solder it back on but it kinda ... failed. So now i need a new card soon. I have absolutely no idea about ATI
cards, and my cousin tells me that anything under 8800 in the 8 series sucks but i have a 100 and under budget. Which one would be a better deal?

yeah i was looking at that but my friend calls me and he just bought me a case and a decent psu! im so happy right now. He says i dont have to pay him. However for the video card hes going to get a 9600GT for me but i have to pay for that.
 
wow what a guy, yea the 9600gt is really fast. Its based of the nVidia G94 graphics core which is much much more efficient than the G92 core used on all the 8800 cards and so far all 9800 cards.

64 shaders on a 9600GT are nearly as fast as 112 or 128 as on the 8800GT and GTS. I have 2 9600gt's in sli and man do they fly! for $150 a piece its hard to justify any other card atm
 
9600gt, the shiz, make sure you have a good power supply if you want 2 of them, 600w or more at least. I love mine. I bought a 750w so I can get two.
 
I read a few forum posts on various tech forums last night and an actual test done by tom's hardware. The majority (and the test results) say the 8800 just barely out performs the 9600, so for 20-40 more bucks, why not? The argument is for a whole whopping 3% more FPS. I'm torn, as I'm getting a new rig soon, which card to get. I'm likely going to go with the 8800 though just because it seems proven to be better then the 9600, but only by a little.

yea, i just bought a 8800 when the 9 seres came out, that always happens to me >.<

forget the 8600, you just have to go 9600, you can find some that are under $100 now. and the 8800 just hit like the $200 price range, i hate them so much >.<

o yea, just in case, you do not a really powerful psu to sli. 500w is good already. the cards dont really even use that much power. i forgot where they check for the system psu test, but ill try to find it later
