Okay, so, building a complete new machine right now is not optional, but, i could just put the best proc i can for the mainboard i own. I just don't know what that is for the best price, so if someone could help me with that thatd be great.

My mainboard is a old ass msi board. Link below shows a preview and details.

Looks like a phenom ii x4 920 or 940 would work as they are socket am2+. Unfortunately, you can only find them on ebay now.

Also, most are going to be used. And if you want a new one, you will pay a premium most likely since they don't make it anymore.

It seems your board is capable of running some of the newer phenom ii x4 chips. This is helpful as far as allowing you to buy new cpus from retail sites at a decent price. However, I am not sure I would trust that board with the power these chips require to function.

This is supported according to the cpu support list on your mobos page. However, you will likely need to flash the bios of your mobo in order to gain support for these newer cpus.

well, huckleberry, could you tell me what motherboard+ram, would be compatible with a geforce 9800 gtx+ with a amd 64 x2 proc. Im told more ram would be a smarter buy for the time being.
 
Upgrading the cpu would be a wise move. The phenom ii x4 is a newer quad core that would crush your old dual core. How much ram do you currently have? Unfortunately, ddr2 ram is pretty expensive, especially compared to newer ddr3 ram. 2x2gb of ddr2 800 ram will run you $50 on newegg which is more expensive than 2x4gb of ddr3 1600 ram. If you have 4gb, then that is about as good as you can do on that board since 2x4gb of ddr2 is $150+ which would be a useless upgrade compared to upgrading your mobo and cpu also.

Do you need a micro atx board? Or will your case fit a regular atx board as well?
 
I have bought a huge case for that very reason, to fit anything when i decide to rebuild.

And ram is very necessary for my rig, because i only have 3 GIGS! xD

What i want to do is maybe find a Mobo and cpu combo, and then get a bit of ram. But they have to be compatible with my Geforce 9800 gtx + for a while before i can afford a msi 7570 or something. If you catch my drift :P

And some 8gb 1600 ddr3 ram with a voltage of 1.5V or lower.

Forget getting a cpu cooler for now and enjoy the extra benefit obtained with this intel cpu. In the future, you can get a decent cpu cooler or a budget one and overclock the 2500k. This thing will own any amd processor out there. I didn't realize you had a little more in the budget to play with. This is definitely the best route to go.

Also, if you happen to have a Microcenter near you, you can get an amazing deal in stores for a 2500k or 3570k with a motherboard combo. This would save you about $100.

This bundle is the newer model cpu/mobo combo (which saves you some money). It also comes out a bit cheaper vs the combo for the 2500k/mobo when you factor in shipping. This combo is the best buy if you don't have a microcenter near you.
