Microsoft getting flak for Windows 8

This article specifically talks about gaming in general for Windows 8. More than 1 guy rips Microsoft a new one in this area. I quit reading it after Microsofts guys didnt really have much to offer. Unless you plan on being an art student, dont get Windows 8. Just stay with Win7 (if you're still on Vista, no comment for now). Im sure that Microsoft will sometime soon get their head outta their a$$ & figure out that they screwed up (yet again).

Having tested the beta of Win8 at work, I can say no way am I going to put it on anything. I can see myself downgrading a bunch of family computers to Win7 in the future though...
 
Having tested it myself this last week or two other than a few compatibility issues which are expected in an OS that isn't even properly RELEASED yet. I don't see what the anger over Windows 8 is. Overall the under the hood improvements are just that... improvements over previous versions. The cosmetic differences of the Metro UI and the "app store" while exist, I use all of zero times a day. Microsoft isn't going to lock down the OS. That would be suicide and they know it.

For those that have used it what's your reasoning for hate. For those who haven't used it try it first before you blindly follow the doomsday predictions of our gaming world leaders.
 
Well I will admit that I havent downloaded it, but I have seen videos that people have uploaded of getting either their parents or grandparents to try & figure out how to use just the BASIC features of Win8. Im talking about simply logging into the OS. With Win7, you either auto booted into the desktop or if you're an admin, then you secured the system with a password. The Win7 OS would immediately pop up asking the user to enter the password at that point & if entered correctly, then would take the user to the desktop.

In Win8, there is no active indication of some kind of window & icon saying "hey click here" to a certain extent. I feel for the parents/grandparents trying to understand Win8. They are so used to the simple mechanics of the START button, not to mention the auto booting to the desktop (grandparents dont need any password setup unless its a family computer). By the way, I didnt just watch 1 video of this happening. I watched multiple videos of different young men installing the beta version of Win8 & then trying to teach their grandparents of how to get to understand the new version of Windows. Needless to say, it became immediately boring waiting for the grandparents to figure out what to do (I gave the videos approx 3-5 mins waiting for the grandparents to understand what they needed to do in order to get to the desktop).

Overall, I really wouldnt hate on something if the maker of the OS didnt do such a horrible job of trying to make something supposedly "user-friendly". I have read multiple articles in the past months before the beta was even available. Im sure that these industry leading big name gaming icons have tested the new beta OS & thats the reason why they have given their feedback. Now let me ask you. Did you hear any of this kind of feedback when Win7 came out? No because Microsoft recognized the error of their mistake by releasing Vista. Thats why they worked hard from the very beginning to correct their mistake in Win7 to make sure that they wouldnt lose customers further because of their lack of foresight. Finally, to put it simple, it seems that Microsoft is trying to please one type of group by making the desktop very "artsy looking". Please feel free to correct me if im wrong on this, but that is my impression from the desktop. Im not trying to hate on the design of the desktop, but it just doesnt flow with me. If anything, it seems very confined. More confined than the normal desktop in the usual setup that the majority of the world is used to. I think thats what they wanted to try & work on & fix, maybe im wrong. Anyways, im still gonna stick with Win7 since I know that Microsoft will continue to take care of it for the next 10 years or so (heck XP still has support til 2014 & theres still plenty of gamers who use that OS).

I agree not going straight to desktop is annoying. The best way to set up is to create a local account so you don't have to put in a password so alll you have to do is click the lock screen when it first shows up. This should bring you on a single account pc to the Metro UI or the start menu as it is now. The "artsy thing" you saw. From there you can either hit the Win key or the tile labeled Desktop and that brings you to the traditional desktop view everyone is used to minus the start button.

The other thing I can see people taking a bit to get used to is not having that traditional start menu. Honestly though I've realized I really never use it and you get used to either keeping the major programs you always use on the taskbar or on the desktop and everything else you can just hit the win key and type the first few letters of the thing you're looking for and its really quick to find it.

I can see the amount of time it takes for an older generation to get used to it though. I think though the sooner they get into it and work with it the quicker they'll find it's actually not that bad and it's actually quite a bit faster. That's just my opinion though.

Do my job for 1 day and you will no longer feel that way about it, it can be painstaking walking people through the current versions. Them making these changes are just going to confuse people more. On the upside this is what keeps me having a job but I have to take the time to learn it inside and out so I'm able to support people properly.

Game companies are going to hate it because microsoft wants to sell it all out of their store and take a cut of the profits. More money to MS less money going to the game companies that we support.

The older generation or anybody that has no idea how to press the on button will never get used to it, I still have to set customers desktop back to classic! I've used Windows 8 in a dual-boot with Windows 7 and everything worked perfectly even with 2 monitors. The only thing that annoyed me was the fact that unless it comes from the store it is not compatible with the Windows Metro System. The way you can categorize the icons on metro would be MUCH easier for customers to learn, although having to move the mouse to the bottom right or top right for example would be a DERP moment for most people.
 
Works Fine for me!

I'm running a preview version and every single game i have works fine except for one(MW3)! It read my SLI cards and drivers installed in a flash! They install fine and play fine without crashing! Deamon Tools WILL not work tho for some reason :( I'm not a huge fan of the tiles tho. I still prefer WIN7 ULTIMATE Tho(which is on a separate partition)
 
I quite like it, granted there are some things which annoy me but it is a lot like Windows 7 but with a few more features so I don't see what the big fuss is about really.
 
I have played around with it. and have found the learning curve on switching from metro to desktop quite easy. but i have also installed Start8 which give you back the start menu and allows you to boot straight to the desktop. do like a good amount of the metro apps. I like the music, Video (plays xvid and divx out of the box)
The xbox app will eventually allow you to play your xbox games through your PC.
The people app integrates live messenger and facebook into one app(you can use facebook messenger within this app).
you will be able to mount ISO's and disk images with out the need of a third party.
What many of you are experiencing is what i experienced back when windows 95 came out. which back then was a drastic change from 3.1 and windows NT.

Well I understand that there was a drastic change from 3.1 to Windows 95, but you have to understand that this is the technology age. You have to download some program just to get you back to having the start menu. With Win7, its already there (no need to download any program for such a thing). Also, a lot of people would find downloading a program just to show the start menu to be a hassle when its already built into the Win7 OS.

Now when it comes to the other things that you have pointed out, ya those are nice lil features to have & therefore some decent strong points, but overall for us as gamers, im wondering what kinda struggle it will be to do some work-arounds just to be able to play the games the regular way we enjoy playing em.

Also, on another note, I must say that im surprised that this thread is getting as much attention as it has.
