TF2 console issue

Good morning!

My developer console in TF2 is acting funny, and I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out what to do with it.

When I first launch TF2, but before I join a server, I can use the console just fine. When I join a server, though, it will sometimes start closing itself when I begin to type. For example, I will open the console, start to type "status", and when I hit the "s", the console closes itself. If I re-open console, it will have the "s" that I typed, but if I type "t" to continue the word, it won't add to what it already typed. It erases it - and the next time I open console, it has "t" already typed in the command line. And so on.

It was working for part of my admin refresher this morning, and only started acting up partway through. I tried exiting and coming back in, but it was still malfunctioning. I finished the training, and when I exited the server back to the main screen, it worked fine again. It also did this the last two times I was in game - once, it came back on for a bit after a map change, and the second, it never did come back on.

A possibility is your game could be corrupted and you should verify your game cache.


1.Load Steam
2.From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
3.Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
4.Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.
5.Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.

Thanks for the tip, ScottBott - I did this, and I defragmented while I was at it. Can't hurt, right? It's still having the issue, but I appreciate you taking the time to answer.

As much of a pain as it may be, I recommend resetting your game settings. Go into options and reset the keyboard settings.

If not, you can also remove config.cfg in your TF2 game files

Certainly sounds like something got corrupted.
Are you running any scripts or add ons? have you altered you autoexe or config files?

Clean out your files or better yet Uninstall TF2 & reinstall
To unstall TF2, go to your /program files/steam/steamapps/"YOUR STEAM NAME" and delete the /team fortress 2 folder. That way, the game is uninstalled, but you do not need to redownload it again, steam will just reinstall it.

What the config file hold is just graphic settings and key bindings and of course some annoying settings but they are located at "Options > Multiplayer > Advanced" and under there "Play a hit sound everytime you injure an enemy." if that's what you mean.

Or you can try to disable "Synchronize with the Steam Cloud." under the same place because that will save your config and recreate it when you removed it. Try to disable that and delete "Team Fortress 2" and start it again and see if that fixed it.

Thanks for your replies, guys! I didn't want to have to reinstall TF2, so I played around with it a bit more. I don't know if it's something about the laptop I'm using or what, but it looks like the tilde key itself might actually be the problem.

If I use tilde to open the console, I get the closing thing going on. If I open console with tilde, then close with Esc, then push Esc again, the console is still open, and I can type in it, no problem. Also, if I re-bind console to another key, it works fine. So I have rebound console, and will just have to re-train my fingers. Not ideal, but it works now.
