Hey guys, I am just settling into my new place after moving across the country. I am looking to build a gaming rig that will stand the test of time (I play DoDs, PS2, CSGO, looking to play ARMA3 on this new machine and any other games that may come in the near future). My only requirements are that it is an Intel machine, dual monitors, and $1200 or under. Have fun! :biggrin:
 
i5 2500k, gtx 670, asus pro mobo, corsair or g.skill ram, coolermaster 212 evo with swapped fans in push/pull, coolermaster 212 case, corsair tx650 PSU, should have some extra cash after that.
 
No offense fetter, but its best to back up what you're gonna post with a link to the items that the person plans to order rather than spew out some parts.

1st off, what all do you already have (this way we dont have to post something that you dont have to waste $$ on)?

2nd off, what size monitors do you want for your new setup?

3rd, are you going to want to get an i5 or i7? Depending on how the hardware goes, it may be best to get the i5 (as im sure you're gonna go with 2 video card setup).

4th, which version of Windows do you wanna get? I highly suggest Win7 since Win8 is still in the process of getting all of its kinks worked out (not to mention that most of the people here play on Win7 anyways).

Last, but certainly not least, AMD or nVidia for video card? Do you have a preference? I only put AMD first because of alphabetical order. I myself am an nVidia guy. Im thinking with your budget you may be hinting at that direction as well, but I definitely dont want to make any negative presumptions.

The sooner we get more straight facts, the sooner we will have a good wishlist build for ya! I also forgot, do you plan to overclock (Im thinking yes with the budget, but its always good to ask instead of assuming the obvious).

No worries about this, I am coming from a MBP that I currently game on lol.

i5 will be fine

I agree also with the Win7 suggestion

Now ive added all this up & it comes up to a lil over $1200. Id say your biggest hinderance in this build is the video cards. All the videos cards are just really up there in price (unfortunately). The only thing I can suggest is going w/ 8gb (2x4gb) of memory at first, & then upgrade later (which is my plan). I do plan to get either that motherboard or a similar one when I get the $$ saved up. Everything else seems right on par with the price.

My suggestion is to take a look around & play around with some of the prices. Maybe theres a different case that may catch your eye better than the 1 I selected & may have a better price tag. If you can add more $$ to your budget, then im sure that you can become more flexible & get the video card that you desire.

I'd say go for 8gb ram and save the extra money for a 660 ti rather than a 560 ti. Better game performance.
 
I stayed with the build you gave me and substituted the 560 for the 660. Thanks for the suggestions.
 
He's got a $1200 budget and you guys are suggesting a non-Ti 660 (and then a 650, again not even a Ti)? This seems like a massive waste of potential to me. ;/ If you haven't ordered yet, here's my attempt at meeting your budget.

It totals up to $1242.95, shipped. You can easily throw a DVD drive for another $20ish. You could dip under-budget if you swap out the 7950 for an AMD Radeon HD 7870 but this build as it is is futureproofed for the next several years to come. Throw an SSD as your boot drive in there at some point and you'll turn a great rig into a beast rig! Let me know what you think.

Feel free to correct me, but you cant do crossfire (even if he wanted to add another card down the line) on an intel board with nvidia graphics built in. Thats what ive been told. Either the driver has a fuss with it and simply wont work or something. I either heard bout that or read it somewhere. Now mind you that that this is info that I was given like 2-3 years ago, so im sure that the technology has either changed or been upgraded.
 
I didn't see anything in any of the posts about doubling up on cards, so I went with a single powerful GPU that leaves room for him to upgrade to another, even better single GPU later down the line if he so desires/needs. :o Unless I misread, in which case my bad!
