EA Promises Not To Be Worst Company Ever
1:30 AM - April 6, 2013 by Kevin Parrish - source: Electronic Arts

Some of the complaints against the company are simply bogus, EA claims.

This topic was too good to pass up: EA will try harder to not be one of the worst companies in America. The promise to "do better" comes directly from EA COO Peter Moore himself who acknowledges that work needs to be done to improve the company's status, but that EA also seems to draw in a lot of "undue hate" as well.

This time last year, a poll conducted by a blog affiliated with Consumer Reports named Electronic Arts as the Worst Company of 2012 based on votes submitted by readers, surpassing Bank of America, AT&T, Walmart and numerous others. EA made the list because of the cost of its games and the extra content customers must buy after the initial purchase? in other words, the company will nickel and dime customers to death. EA also seems to scoop up start-ups in order to squash the competition.

"For years, while movies and music became more affordable and publishers piled on bonus content -- or multiple modes of delivery -- as added value to entice customers to buy, video games have continued to be priced like premium goods," the Consumerist stated.

Moore said on Friday that EA was voted to be worse than the companies responsible for the biggest oil spill in history, the mortgage crisis, and bank bailouts that cost millions of taxpayer dollars. Complaints against the publisher ranged from the company's support for SOPA to the ending of Mass Effect 3.

"We can do better. We will do better," he said. "But I am damn proud of this company, the people around the globe who work at EA, the games we create and the people that play them. The tallest trees catch the most wind. At EA we remain proud and unbowed."

He goes on to admit that EA has made plenty of mistakes, including server shut downs too early, games that didn?t meet expectations, missteps on new pricing models, and the "severely fumbling" launch of SimCity (putting it lightly). Some of the complaints EA has received or heard via press are legitimate, while other complaints -- like the always-on feature in SimCity serving as DRM (and it does no matter what he claims) -- are pure garbage.

"In the past year, we have received thousands of emails and postcards protesting against EA for allowing players to create LGBT characters in our games," he said. "This week, we?re seeing posts on conservative web sites urging people to protest our LGBT policy by voting EA the Worst Company in America. That one is particularly telling. If that?s what makes us the worst company, bring it on. Because we're not caving on that."

"We are committed to fixing our mistakes," he added. "Over the last three weeks, 900,000 SimCity players took us up on a free game offer for their troubles. We owed them that."

I'll believe it when I see it, EA. Still waiting on those patches for SimCity. And explain your Pay-to-Win business model for new games too while you're at it... DRM still?

I hope EA shrivels and dies as a company. For years, their company policy has been to suck as much money as possible out of their gullible customers, without offering much (if, indeed, any) quality in return. Now that they see their finances shrinking and their growth slowing, they are making half-baked apologies and promises in order to stop the bleeding.

Too little, far too late. They get no sympathy from me.

+1

Unfortunately, there's plenty of companies that seem to want to compete with EA for worst.

I'm supprised they didn't get beat by hammerpoint interatctive. Those guys are at the bottom of the barrel

Anyways, here are my thoughts on EA games:

First thing they have to do is to promise not to implement micro transactions into their future games as they have planed. Secondly better live chat support, its a pain to navigate the website to find where i can open a chat with costumer support, last time it took me maybe 10 minutes to figure it out. They should also listen more to costumer feedback

In regards to the sim city problems this is something EA should be judged for. Every company has server issues when a game is released. With everyone logging on at the same time, the server WILL crash. If you look back I'm sure this is something that has happened before, i can for starters mention diablo 3 and its infamous "error 63 scandal".
it should be noted i have not played the game, so this section is based on information i have heard from others

There's also allegations that EA bans hackers just to get them to buy more copies to earn them money.. Now I'm pretty sure EA games can't prevent people from buying copies when they are banned, and they certainly can't make the store check if you have a ban history with the game and deny you service if you do, it may infact be downright illegal.

When all comes to all i think EA has some flaws, but it's nothing that can't be fixed

It "happening before" is not an excuse. I can point to just as many games, and probably more that had at least the same amount of players on day 1, and had no problems. Or at the very least not on the scale that EA did; EA having a boatload of capital and resources to prevent said problems, if they cared. If they were not so worried about their greedy investors, and actually gave a damn about their customers...

As the article says, there are plenty of complaints that are not founded, and should hold no weight in decisions that the company (or the public) make. My view is, why care about or even mention the baseless and carping complaints, when there are so many legitimate ones laying around?

Sure they can, its called Origin.

EA just sucks plain and simple. I quit battlefield 3 when they released premium. It was ridiculous. They basically wanted everyone to have to rebuy the game or suffer through having people kill them with new weapons and rank up faster with double xp events every weekend. Plus the gold dog tags really rubbed it in everyone's face...

Yeah. I saw that story and all I could think of was all the people who signed up for gym memberships for the new year, and only used it once...

On another note, a friend of mine told me that he read somewhere that EA fired their CEO due to declining sales numbers.. Does anyone know anything about this?

Yup, it was in the news recently. Too lazy atm to get the source. Of course, it was during the Sim City Debacle, so make of that what you will.

I just hope Battlefield 4 turns out great. :) I still think Battlefield 2 was better than 3.

You are getting your hopes up... They're trying to turn the Battlefield series into Call of Duty except charging you for features they took out of the core game to turn them into DLCs.

Too bad the Call of duty series RUINED FPS gaming in general and declined the quality of enjoyment in the games by 75%. Its everyone trying to compete with call of duty and when every kid or youtube swears their life by one of the worst series to be dragged out and be more boring than any other game in history doesnt help the situation and it makes it harder for REALLY GOOD GAMES like the bioshock series to get swept under the rug. Bioshock was an amazing game. Still is. What ever happened to singleplayer games with real story time like Grand theft auto? Hell. Even those were great games with some fun story line even if it always involved running people over with my car...

I read from several news outlets that their CEO resigned, and was not fired.

EA CEO Resigns Due to Financial Misses
Tiffany Kaiser - March 18, 2013 6:50 PM

He has held himself accountable for falling short of the company's financial guidance

Electronic Arts' (EA) chief executive officer announced his resignation today due to missed financial targets.

EA CEO John Riccitiello has resigned after six years of service, which will be effective March 30, 2013. Riccitiello will also no longer be a member of the board of directors.

"This is a tough decision, but it all comes down to accountability," said Riccitiello in an internal memo. "The progress EA has made on transitioning to digital games and services is something I'm extremely proud of. However, it currently looks like we will come in at the low end of, or slightly below, the financial guidance we issued in January, and we have fallen short of the internal operating plan we set one year ago. EA's shareholders and employees expect better and I am accountable for the miss.

"EA is an outstanding company with creative and talented employees, and it has been an honor to serve as the Company's CEO. I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and after six years I feel it is the right time for me pass the baton and let new leadership take the Company into its next phase of innovation and growth. I remain very optimistic about EA's future; there is a world class team driving the Company's transition to the next generation of game consoles."

EA's board of directors has appointed EA executive Larry Probst to fill in as executive chairman until the company finds a permanent CEO. Probst was CEO of the company from 1991-2007 when Riccitiello stepped in.

"We thank John for his contributions to EA since he was appointed CEO in 2007, especially the passion, dedication and energy he brought to the Company every single day," said Probst. "John has worked hard to lead the Company through challenging transitions in our industry, and was instrumental in driving our very significant growth in digital revenues. We appreciate John's leadership and the many important strategic initiatives he has driven for the Company. We have mutually agreed that this is the right time for a leadership transition."

Game publishers like EA have had a rough time in the financial department due to digital sales becoming as increasingly popular as box retail game sales -- and it doesn't help that EA recently had server issues with its largely popular release "SimCity."

"SimCity" launched earlier this month, and many servers crashed during the international release. EA announced that it would add more servers to help out the workload.

Another statistic to note why CEO resigned; since he became CEO in 2007, EA's stock has dropped 60%. Trust me, he resigned before the board and shareholders had a chance to fire him at the next stockholders' meeting.

And when he announced this back on Mar 18, EA's stock price had a small price climb after a modest tumble at the start of the next trading day. This is a company that has bowed to financial pressures and profit demands from shareholders and has forgotten to please the number one group it must always remember: its customers.

Resigned is just a nice way in big companies of saying "YOURE FIRED" ...Most of the time big ceo,s will get the choice of either resigning or being fired
