I'm not certain if this is the right forum for this. I hope the admins will not see it as spam or anything derogatory. That is not my intent. Please see the humor in it though it is a dark humor. I apologize for the length of this rant/attempt to educate.
I am homeless.
Thanks to Uncle Sam, Wall Street and the "elite", I lost everything a few years back. The only thing I still have from my "normal" life is my acoustic guitar. After a long time of saving and some help from a very nice lady, I was able to get this craptop (only called so in comparison to most gaming rigs;i.e.desktops). While I wish to one day get a gaming desktop,it's impractical in my current situation. One day I'll have that Origin laptop I've been drooling over, but that's a looooong way off as it's about $3500. But even a Qosmio will do.
My craptop is a Toshiba Satellite S875D-S7239 with AMD A10 4600M APU. I like it because I can game again. Not the best or most ideal setup but use what you got, amiright? I'm still new to PC gaming and PC in general coming in from consoles and I learn something new everyday. My first online game experience was CoD Modern Warfare 1 on the PS3. Still have trouble with mouse/keyboard so my aim is crap now.
There are some things I've learned about common sense, common courtesy and etiquette when out and about in this world of WiFi. I'm a retarded noob at PC and such so if I can figure it out then and put it into practice, so can everyone else.
The only place I've found that lets me connect to Battlefield 3 servers is Starbucks. Sitting here I've noticed how woefully ignorant people are about how internet works, especially crApple users. Most people don't understand that a multimillion dollar corporation like Starbucks is extremely cheap about their WiFi deal with AT&T. It is a crap slow WiFI. I'm surprised that I can play BF3 on this network, at least when there aren't a lot of people on it anyway. One day I'll get the Verizon WIFI hotspot which is 10GBs a month for a hundo.
So those of you who are tech savvy instruct friends and family on this subject.
"Shared WiFI". The key word here is SHARED. DO NOT have more than 3-4 Tabs open. All those .gifs, ads, videos buffering, etc. chew up bandwidth and rob EVERYONE including yourself of bandwidth, speed, etc. Get an AdBlocker, it helps. The biggest perpetrators to this? MAC users. Really it is. I think they might all be retarded. Let me share with you what happened one day.
So I'm playing BF3 while no one was in the store before going out to busk up some money, getting good ping and actually having some good games for a change. A guy comes in and sets up his mac, ONLY THIS ONE GUY.
I went from a 27 ping to 1871 ping in a matter of seconds. So I quit knowing the problem. I get up and go stand in line for the bathroom. I look over his shoulder and he has at least 20 tabs opened, a video call with his girlfriend going on AND his tablet with I don't know how many tabs going. I hear this guy talking to his girlfriend say "I don't know why we're have issues with video chatting" or something along those lines (he was very loud), he then proceeds to call her on his phone WHILE video chatting with her. I had to restrain myself from using FIST OF DEATH as a final move. This ladies and gentlemen is a douchebag hipster. And yes he looked the part too. EVERY Mac user that I have seen come in here does something similar.
EVERY #&$^@*! ONE OF THEM.
They have no idea how things work and should be the one of the first thrown against the wall and shot when the revolution comes to prevent the retard gene from passing on. The PC users except for a few I have witnessed, all know how it works. They, for the most part, understand what "Shared WiFI" means.
Now don't get the wrong idea. I'm not creeper stalking people. I look at their screen to see how many tabs , that's it. Very easy to see in a quick glance when walking out to have a cigarette. I'm also not hating on or trying to get hate on for Apple. I have opinions about the company and its users that are strong due to things I have witnessed. If you've ever had lag issues due to a roomate or family member being online with you and doing something similar as what I am talking about, then you know the rage that comes. Dying because you didn't clear that corner, ambushed from behind or just plain suck is one thing. Dying because your ping is flucuating from say 50-675 and back down to 50 because someone on the network is doing way too much is frustrating to say the least.
So the point of this rant is to begin educating people on the subject.
1.Shared means for everyone connected to the network. Whether you're at the coffeeshop, the airport or your house. Keep browsing limited to 3-4 tabs while running an Adblocker, 1 download, and maybe 1 video buffering. Doing so will help your internet speeds as well as everyone elses. It will also help download speeds if you do them 1 at a time. You don't need 5 Facebook pages open and 7 YouTube videos buffering. Yes......people do this.
2.If you must video chat, close out IE, Firefox, Chrome, or Safari. It will give you better ping(?) and better chat results. Close any programs that connect to internet in the background as well. I still haven't figured out all of them on my PC yet. And still must determine if they are neccessary or not.
When I play BF3 I only have the server browser tab opened and end about 3 processes in task manager that I know can be shut down safely. BF3 only uses 14.2 mb of data sent and received in about 20 min. I think that's less than an average YouTube video in HD. And prbably about the same as a video call. (my google skills suck so I don't have those numbers, they always come back in mb/s instead which I understand but can't calculate).
3.Smartphones.WE all have them. I have an iPhone 3G (the biggest reason I can't stand Apple, no support for old devices,no archive of apps for the iOS I have and cannot upgrade, essentially forcing people to buy new every time the next generation of stolen ideas,.....er I mean of devices comes out).I have found that turning off the WIFI in settings saves battery life. It also keeps your device from connecting to any saved networks automatically and getting said network to allocate x amount of bandwidth to that device thus screwing up everyones network speed. I went from charging my phone every day and a half to charging it every 4-5 days. I don't call alot of people, just family and a couple of friends to check in and let them know I'm still alive. So your charges will vary by your usage but will still be better than going about with WiFi enabled. There's nothing so important you can't spend the extra 2 sec to turn on your WiFi. Facebook is still there, so is twitter and all the other social sites which everyone posts their personal crap on and then complain about a lack of privacy. And those sites are the majority of sites gone to by the average user.
You would think this would be common knowledge by now, but alas that is not the case. People go to these places for free WIFI and don't think about how it works and proceed to surf the web as if it was their own personal network. I have had to bite my tongue many times as it is not my place as a customer to educate these people on how to have some common sense and courtesy. Some would probably do it just to be a douchebag troll knowing that if I beat them with their own laptop I would go to jail.
So if there is anything I missed here please enlighten me as I am still learning about how PC works. I have a long way to go and Google hasn't been that good of a friend in this endeavor as I have yet to learn how to google properly. Exact phrases always come back with everything but what I'm looking for,.....well a majority of them anyway.
I apologize if I offend anyone with an Apple user in the family. It is treatable you know.
