New laptop issue

I created an old thread bout my current laptop around the beginning of the year, but council/advisors hate for members to res old threads, so im gonna start up a new one bout the same laptop.

My current issue is that at times, whenever im online, the cpu wants to be taken up by some process or program. Problem is that when I look at Task Manager, I see nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing shoes over 5% usage (which would give me a visual red flag).

Any ideas on how to possibly overcome this? Btw, just a lil heads up, im using Chrome w/ less than 10 tabs.

Could you clarify your post? You're saying that something is taking up CPU usage but at the same time Windows shows only 5% usage? That's a little confusing.

If I were you I'd not be looking for CPU usage but instead be checking if anything is being written to my hard drive whenever you experience these lag issues. When windows or Steam is updating a game that can have your hard drive writing at max speed and will look like CPU lag.

Well first off it has absolutely nothing to do with Steam, so I do apologize that you got confused about that. I simply said that as I was surfing online, my cpu usage would get a huge spike (usually between 63-100%) & it would last like that for about 2-3 mins before the system would come back to normal.

However, I actually figured out the issue on my end after I posted it. Due to my laptop, certain sites will temporarily use excess amounts of my cpu (for whatever reason) & then its back to normal on my laptop. I did also find out that Chrome was the ultimate culprit on this issue because I pulled up Firefox & decided to test it out on that browser & worked just fine.

So overall, there are things that Firefox can handle better than Chrome can (on some sites). Odd isnt it? Just goes to show just how bad I need an upgrade on a laptop. However, when my sister is finally ready to upgrade her laptop, im gonna take her laptop & install win7 on it. She has Vista on her laptop as well.

Chrome seems to use a lot more CPU, you could always limit the program though.

How do you know it was using excess CPU usage if Windows wasn't showing it?

My guess is he had task manager up, and was watching the CU usage history. And he correlated the spike to whatever programs he may have been using.

On a related note, I have the same issue where it does the spike. If you want to see how bad it can get, try watching how it acts when you upload the eGO website, forums, yahoo.com, and say cnn.com; one at a time, and with multiple tabs running at once. It's very frustrating to see how inefficient Chrome acts, especially with videos and advertisements (curse you Java!)
