Hey all,
Your resident Spitfire'd here. Pull up a chair, kick your feet up. I have a story to tell. If you haven't played the Assassin's Creed games and want to, this thread may not be for you, there are some spoilers. Read on at your own risk.
This is about Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. How do I begin this look? Preface. Ever since Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, I haven't cared much about the main story of the game. It's not because it wasn't somewhat intriguing or anything like that. Brotherhood's was still interesting enough to get me through it, but the real reason that I lost interest in the single player experience of an Assassin's Creed game was the multi-player.
It was so unique, unlike anything else out there, and so much fun that it absolutely sucked me in. To date it remains one of the best multi-player modes out there in my humble opinion. No game is more fun and more rage inducing.
When AC: Revelations came out, it was months before I even played through the story. I didn't care at all. I continued to play multi-player and enjoy that. Eventually I went and played through the story, but it had very little appeal to me and it was a long time before I could appreciate it in any capacity. The game was going stale and the little additions in each game didn't bring much to the table, least of all in Revelations.
Last year, AC III was hyped up huge. And why wouldn't it be? They put the setting in the American Revolutionary war, they had the expansive frontier, they even had some naval missions. Multi-player added a new "Wolfpack" mode which was a great cooperative way to enjoy a great experience with friends.
Yet for everything it added, I just didn't like the single-player. My favorite part was the beginning, before you even played as Connor, when you played as his father Haytham Kenway the templar. He was better developed than Connor.
AC III became about how Connor single-handedly won the Revolutionary war while looking for Charles Lee, and I hated that. I had no interest in developing the homestead and the one bright spot of this game, naval combat, was entirely too short. Again another game in the series where I stuck to multi-player, immensely enjoying the new Wolfpack mode in addition to running my usual domination of the Wanted game mode (too many people run too much).
So where does Black Flag land? So far I'm loving it. For the first time I'm interested in the single player campaign again. Isn't that nuts! You're playing as Edward Kenway (Haytham's father) and I don't even want to get into the spoilers as this is a fresh game. Let's just say I find his induction into the Assassin/Templar struggle a unique and fresh one.
I must not have been the only person who enjoyed the naval combat, because this game is built around it. The game takes place in the Caribbean in the golden age of piracy. Your ship is your home and there is a ton to do on the open sea.
At the end of the day it is just a re-imagining of activities you would do in the other games, but something about the new context and scenery make it feel different, fresh and new. The Assassin's Creed gameplay feels like it has been mixed with the gameplay of Sid Meier's Pirates and I absolutely love the result.
The multi-player is the part of the game that feels stale this time around, and even though I'll still enjoy some good time with it, it is just not the main draw for me this time around.
So if you're a fan of the Assassin's Creed series and want to discuss Black Flag or ask questions, post away. Share your journey through the series like I did, post your initial thoughts on IV, let's discuss this game!
If you don't have the game, have no interest in buying it and just want to post pot shots and crap, this thread isn't for you, post somewhere else please.
tl;dr: Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is a great fresh take on a stale series
