Upgrading

So I am going to upgrade my graphics card and processor and I have no clue what is good!

My price range would be about 160$ on each piece of equipment

So my pc now has a GeForce GTX 550ti and an AMD Phenom ii

It also has 4GB of RAM
That's all I know about my PC without opening it up I hope this is enough information if you need more just ask
Someone recommended an Asus HD 7870 AMD Radeon DirectCU II because it was a good price for my budget.

They also recommended an AMD FX8320 Black Edition 8 Core processor.

I want to hear your thoughts and recommendations

here is my specs and i have it overclocked to 4.6 ghz with cool temps of 30 c idle to 55 c full load doing folding at home.
vid temps are 25 c idle and 60 c full load folding



cpu: 8350
motherboard: asus M5A99x PRO R2.0
hard drive: western digital 1 TB 7200 rpm 64 meg cache sata
memory: 32 GIG 2 times G.SKILL Sniper Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900)
GPU: EVGA 780 GTX SC
POWER SUPPLY: CORSAIR RM Series RM750 750W

Current motherboard, RAM, PSU will help since you're looking at getting a new CPU and GPU. Also need your budget.

I hate to break it to ya, but we need further details on the cpu. Is it dual core or quad core? Doubt its 6 core or you wouldnt have the op talking about wanting a new cpu.

If you have CPU-Z, please run that & take a screenshot please so that we can get the specs on your cpu & motherboard. Need to know what core cpu you have along w/ the socket of the motherboard. This way we can educate you on which processor would be a worthy upgrade based on your price range.

Thats a problem I have no clue I have checked every where on the PC and it says it doesn't know what it is

Not sure how worth it it would be to upgrade your processor on only a $150 budget...

My PSU puts out 450W which recently died and now I plan on getting a 600W PSU


Sushi since Christmas Day is over I have a bit more cash and with my birthday coming up during January I will probably be able to spend about 200-250$ on each thing

Its not really worth it to upgrade your CPU. Its still a great CPU even being a few years old. I have the same one except its a quad core and not a 6 core. Personally, Save all your cash and buy some more ram, a really reliable and decent power supply, and a mid-high end graphics card instead of a low to mid/low end.

Your probably right with a six core processor there is no point in getting a new one, so now the question is what graphics card. I'm am not sure what brand of ram and why 2 GB of a certain brand lets say is 40$ and another is 70$

It depends on how many slots you have for your ram.

If you already have a 4 gig stick of ram just purchase a second 4 gig stick from the same company that you purchased the old ram from. (make sure they are the same model.)

As for a graphics card it depends on how much you're looking to spend without upgrading your CPU. You can get a mid to high end graphics card if you're going spend more on the GPU.

I would stick with what you have and just get more RAM because 4GB isn't alot
