Steam starts every time offline

Steam starts every time offline. My view friends list says (you are currently set to appear offline to all your friends). But when I got to settings --> friends , i have Automatically sign into Friends when I start steam checked.. I've tried it both checked and unchecked, same results. Any idea? Thanks.
