Samsung Galaxy S3 issue

So my dad has been noticing some recent battery drain in his S3 phone. I did some research & found that the latest version of Android for the phone (4.3) is known for having battery drain.

My question is will the phone's hardware be able to handle the speed of Kitkat? Right now the phone is plenty for my dad, as I asked him if he was planning on upgrading when the time comes & he said that hes fine with it.

Also I wondering what all I need to know when it comes to upgrading the Android software. Is Cyanogenmod safe to put on the S3?

You can essentially test drive any Rom as long as you remember to back up the original. The S3 should be able to run it but there might be some features that won't work.. usual suspects are wifi and camera. Best place to get info is at the XDA Developers forums. I've had the Note 2 the S4 and the Note 3 is my current phone.

I know the ancient DROID 4 has kitkat roms for example but I've only put jellybean on it.

Lastly the battery issue. Get an app from the play store called greenify it will keep data hog apps that drain the battery at bay. Also be sure you don't have windows upon windows of apps open. Hold down the home button and close those apps.

Also, if he has not already, have your dad mention it to his carrier. My S3 had issues with battery drain and the camera failed right out of the box (it worked for a day) and they replaced for free because of them being known issues. Now I never have issues with my battery and I am a heavy user.
 
I apologize for being late on my reply. I will search for the greenify app to help with the battery drain. However, when it comes to switching the ROM, I know for a fact that my dad really doesnt worry bout the wifi (since he always has 4g on, even tho thats a battery drainer in itself) & he almost never uses his camera. I will check the XDA boards to see what I should go after. Also to IP, my dad has had his phone for around a year now, so getting it switched out is more than likely out of the question.
 
I used to develop ROMs and its very easy to install any rom onto your phone and it's especially true for Samsung phones as they are usually easy to unlock. So all i can say is, goto XDA and look for an thread which will guide you through unlocking procedures. If you have doubts then add me on steam then i can try to help you out..
