Don't take it personally!

I was driving home the other day, and a guy wouldn't let me over. I immediately thought he was a callous jerk, keeping me from getting where I needed to go. This morning, I realized I hadn't seen someone signaling to get into my lane, and they cut me off rather sharply. They must have thought of me precisely what I thought of the guy who wouldn't let me in.

What's the point? Well, we have this tendency when upset or offended to ascribe permanent characteristics to the offender rather than realizing there's no intent to do any harm to us or upset us in any way. The other guy may just not have looked. He may be in a hurry. His mom may have just died. Better to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Now I'll translate this to what it means in game. Never take things in game personally. My rule of thumb: if there's any doubt, give the other player the benefit. Take the comment as a joke, and never let it get under your skin. None of us expresses himself or herself perfectly, but most of us are good people who want to have fun with others in this fantastic community.

Here's a harder scenario for consideration. What happens if you're disciplined? An admin may make a decision you don't agree with. You may be kicked, you may get a temporary ban.

Understand that a good administrator isn't attacking you personally. He or she is simply taking care of a rules violation or server disruption as politely and efficiently as possible. In fact, they may take an action to help you become a better player and give you the chance to reflect on what the community means to you. In some cases, we've had tremendous success stories from just such actions.

If someone's really just an unpleasant person, that will show in time and be dealt with, but 9 times out of 10, that's not the case. If you don't take anything in game personally, you'll save yourself tremendous aggravation and take control of the one thing that can turn any situation around for you: your attitude.

[/end Monkey rambling] :D

Monkey, aside from apologizing for cutting you off the other day, I have nothing to say but "wow," and "that is an exceptional piece of prose, my friend."

I can't drive, so this doesn't apply to me. :D
Nah, im kiddin', this applies to everyone. And Monkeybits, you worded it perfectly. If you get kicked, it's not because the admins don't like you, it's because we're maintaining peace in the servers, and enforcing the rules.

No hard feelings, Flippy, I figured you were angry for me running over a furry relative.

Herm, as you guessed, my posts usually arise from something that's been floating around in my head. I had a player I'd disciplined bitterly angry with me for it. I made every effort to contact him personally and didn't get a response. I heard from other sources that he thought I personally disliked him.

That got me wondering, "How many other people might feel that way? I'm not the only one who's kicked a player." Through my association with other admins, I've come to realize every one I've met is all about the community and server environment. I haven't seen any vendettas or anyone seriously disliking a given player. Disliking the behavior, perhaps, but not the player.

Those thoughts coalesced into this post. Admins on our servers care about the servers and the people on them, and I thought I might help express that position to anybody interested in reading it.

I always appreciate and respect someone that can think outside the box, and relate it to things that happen inside the box.

Whereas I'm just as likely to gun my engine and give the other driver the choice of 'let me in' or 'crash'.

I think something that needs to be addressed is the other side of the coin. A good admin also cannot let his feelings towards a player affect his administration. Be it over-reacting to a player you don't like or letting a player you do like slide, both are detrimental to the server as a whole. Admins have to be impartial. If you do not feel you are capable of disciplining someone you like, call in another admin to handle it.

I'm Flippy the Squirrel, and I endorse this message.

... but seriously, folks ... if someone you know is being problematic, than that's disrespectful towards you. If they presume that you'll let them slide because you're pals, then they're making a presumption of favor that shouldn't exist and trying to take advantage of your relationship, which is a pretty awful thing to do.

some would say my behavior, well, has been very down the drain. I've cause numerous problems and its all around been a bad experience for them and also for me. I was giving myself a less than average image of myself and soiling my reputation. I just wish to prove that past all that happened, I'm a decent person. I try hard in life to be a good person and I even go out of my way to help someone, just this time a side of me came out that I should've not let out. I'm currently working hard on changing my ways because I want to show people that even though my previous behavior was bad, I'm a good person and who I really am, i hate that people think of me as a disrespectful player that is just there to cause problems, I want people to see me as a person who can make a game a pleasant, fun one. I would like to apologize to everyone i have caused problems with and I cannot thank you enough for the chances you gave me it means alot to me and many of my friends who play on your servers and are in your clan. If i keep working hard I hope ill be able to call myself an eGO.

Agreed

As for driving and pushing someone over, thats what the bumper is for. LOL. Had a similar situation when I was driving myself.

As for the post, good job monkeybits, right on. I appreciate seeing this on this clans website. It helps me realize that I picked a good clan.

The only thing you can change about yourself is your attitude. So its best to change it for the better.

With a great post like this, it can only get better. Congratulation Dopey there is already a great improvement and I am extremely proud. I also believe that your journal is an excellent idea and its healthy to write about experiences, we can only learn and grow from them. Good job !
