Was hoping to see someone jump off a ledge on the far side to trip it and kill someone on the stairs. Left disappointed

Does it detonate if you activate it at the very end and do you die from the explosion?

It will only kill you if your standing next to the mine. So if you place a mine with a long laser to the end point and go through the laser at the endpoint, it will just explode the mine which you will not be near
