Enable Replays?

Quick question for those that have been around a while; were replays ever enabled on eGO's TF2 servers? If so, why were they disabled (server performance, causing crashes, etc)? Would we ever consider re-enabling them?

It might be one more pro for folks to join our servers if they see replay recording is enabled. There are times I wish I could record a replay for review or to work on a video :)

I did a search and couldn't find a relevant thread on the topic. Please forgive me if I just overlooked it ;)

Thanks!

They took up EXTREME amounts of space and also caused server performance to drop drastically.

^ What Stealth said.

However, there is an alternative that PZ showed me called P-Rec this is a great program that essentially records every game you go into automatically as a demo.

replay would crit the servers really badly i recall when we had it. not a good idea if you want the game to be playable

Forgive me if I'm somewhat ignorant... But do we know why it creates such bad performance? Other servers I used to play on had it enabled and worked perfectly fine.

I dont know if this is still the case but we used to share a box that contained all our servers(keep in mind we had close to almost 7 servers) on it with another game, at the time it was Battlefield. Procon would begin eating or leaking resources if i recall and former leadership was always going on about that. Somewhere between that and replay already being a monster at eating even more resources we would get the lag spikes. Turning replay bot off always helped it run smoother. This was a year or so ago so things may have changed also there's a bigger tech team now than just good old Potato-roth with his nooooarrr.

this was the last thing that was done with it before it was removed:

As far as I remember back when I used to handle the servers here (also hi :)) when we had them enabled they were set up to save to a remote FTP server, whenever there was a connection issue with said remote the game server would effectively lock up, thus causing most players to drop connection.

Can confirm.

:biggrin:I would enjoy having replays enabled. It seems like I get my greatest moments on eGO servers and not having replays is weird, but I'm fine with whatever:).

Even if the replays were enabled, I would still use shadowplay provided by NVIDIA. The replay editor in TF2 is hard to deal with imo and it is just a pain to go through. My suggestion is get a higher end NVIDIA graphics card so you can use shadowplay (I believe 600 series and above). Then you can record a set number, provided by you, of past minutes anytime you want without losing performance. It then spits out a DVR video to the file location you specify and then you can edit from there. I just use Movie Maker provided by my OS, but there are others out there as well.

Refer to my previous post on this thread or use PepperRabbit's method above
