When I was in Colchester, I was duty driver one day and my last trip was 2300 hrs picking up the foot patrol guys. I got into bed by 2400 hrs and as I was just snuggling up I heard footsteps acrossing the square, I knew it was for me.
The duty sergeant told me and another MP to go to a police station north of us in Norfolk and pick up a deserter who had been arrested. After a couple of hours driving we passed a USAF base and a mile or so down the road we came to an open road house and decided to stop for a coffee, there was about 30 US air staff in there some were talking other's playing pool. We sat in a corner out of the way but some of the airmen started to abuse us, "so we thought 15 to one not bad odd's if push came to shove "joke", but a few of the airmen told them to leave us alone ,as there was no problems. So things calmed down and we finished our coffee and left. Found the police station and picked up our prisoner and delivered him to the Army barracks he came from. We returned to Colchester by roll call. This was my first encounter with Americans and glad it was a peacefull one. My second was a few month's later in London evening patrol, a GI, drunk and making a nuisance of himself to passer's by, I arrested him and took him to our holding cell's behind Scotland Yard.

Alcohol seems to bring the worst out of some people.
